For those complaining about receiving a green reward from Spider over the course of the second week’s narrative…
During the first week Spider ”gave us a choice” of three Engrams and lauded us for our good fortune when we were well rewarded.
This week we again ”got to choose” between three engrams and he commiserated with us when we ”chose” a dud.
This is meant to show us that Spider is attempting to manipulate us into believing we have agency when dealing with him, that he wants us to ignore the coercive means by which he tries to turn things to his advantage.
Think of this as a magician performing a card force; they ask you to “pick a card” but have set up the trick in such a way as to know what card you have before you ever touch it; they have selected which card you will get in order for the trick to play out as they intend, all the while letting you believe it was your choice.
This same illusion of choice is employed by conmen and hucksters, notably in Three Card Monte and other supposed ”games of chance” in which the perpetrator forces losses on players until they feel the need to allow someone to win to prove the game isn’t rigged.
This will no doubt extend into more meaningful plot developments later in the season. In the end if things work out in his favor but leave our Guardian and others unhappy, Spider can claim that we have been the ones making the choices all along and only have ourselves to blame for out misfortune.
