Take a look back at Y1 (of D2)* for a moment. Beside all of the poor gameplay choices that Bungie made, they still managed to tell a great story for new players to experience.
Take a look at what we have now, and realize that New Players load into the Destiny 1 mission, only to be met by John Guardian, who proceeds to take New Lights under his wing for exactly 4 missions before dumping them at the Tower. Where is the direction for players to go? What story is there to experience that will convince new players to purchase DLC's?
Am I wrong to think this way? I've had so many people call me ridiculous for thinking this way.

It's garbage, and most new players are not going to go watch videos or read lore to catch up, like so many are suggesting. If it's not in game, it's not happening.

Edited by Eliksni Gunslinger: 8/4/2022 7:38:46 PMIn D1 right now you can start brand new and play every mission, quest, strike, raid and campaign ever introduced on however order you wish to at your own pace In D2 right now, if your just getting on the bus, you missed a heap of context, that the bus driver isn't going back for I think it's safe to say Bungie has given up on new players at this point and are just milking the addicts that are still here
-
Is there a story ?
-
Its a weird place because we are at a point where seasonal story telling is sometime a great introduction and sometimes not. Same with yearly. Its a “if you know you know” story which makes newer players feel unwelcomed. Shadowkeep really pushed that.

1 ReplyEdited by RabbitEars: 8/4/2022 2:27:43 AMNew players just get boned in this game. Not even worth playing sense you’re missing out on a -blam!- tone of content. They literally took out the main story of d2! There are so many ways to do things is stead of vaulting stuff but we all know when game developers get lazy they produce fast answers with the dumbest of outcomes. Bungie is just sucks anymore their glory days are back with D1 and halo.
-
Red war who?
-
They claim it to be a PvE game yet this is the case. They’re covering up for a lack of care.
-
I wonder if this could be rectified with a quest entitled “previously in Destiny” that just has a checklist of the campaigns/activities available in the order they dropped. Sure it would have 100+ steps but our season quest now is like 50+ every season anyway.

Replay button on timeline in directory. Press Replay button you get a recap/montage of Story/events.

1 ReplyEdited by Smough: 8/3/2022 4:42:16 PMIt’s gotta be funny when a new light does witch queen campaign. “Savawho? Never heard of her.” There should be in game ways to learn about what happened in the past and to get caught up on lore. Whether through dialogue with other characters or those nifty artistic cutscenes bungie does. I guess there’s that past events thing that you can view, but a short description of what happened is hardly fitting for such a long story.

i feel like this would be like someone buying the 5th harry potter book and being upset that the previous 4 books weren't included with their purchase.
-
Mostly, it's just hard to explain 7 years worth of story to new players in a timely manner. Personally I think they should copy mass effect legendary edition and add a comic that sums up the story so far. Also this comic should be available if you skip a season/dlc.
-
At this point, they could make an ingame "lore link board" that links to MyNameIsByf videos for explanations.

It's not its unfriendly but because it's an afterthought...

I can understand that Bungie doesn’t want the main game download to be well over 100GB, pushing 200 or even 300GB. That’s a lot to ask somebody to download if they even just want to try the game. I can understand that if D2 has this many bugs and issues, the game at that size could be even worse to maintain. There are ways of making the new light player experience better. No matter what they would, could, or should do to improve it will cost money. And I think it’s worth the investment, but maybe they have data that says otherwise. That shows new player retention is no worse now than it has ever been since D2 lunched or went free to play. Bungie could update the new light story to be longer and do more to catch a player up. They don’t have to play through red war campaign to know what happened. You can create context without reliving something. Make some new missions with a short campaign specifically to make new guardians feel like they’re an important new character in the on going story, and through it catch them up on the big events. Some mission to kill/stop a major lieutenant of Gaul who’s refusing to align with Caital. Throughout we see remnants and hear about what happened during the Red War. Help Crow who’s stumbled across some big unfinished business of Cayde’s, as we see him deal with having the memory of what he did, but also hearing about who Cayde was from Crow and others in the tower as you progress. Bungie could even just put all DCV story/campaign stuff into a separate game file that is complete independent from the core game. No loot, no level requirement. Just missions. Characters and vault have a curated selection of weapons and armor. They can call it something simple, like Destiny Legacy, and it just be free. It gets added to over time as more gets pulled from the main game with each expansion. It can be large I file size because it’s all just supplemental material. What worries me is the thought that the biggest reason the new light story is so bare. Why the DCV really exists, and why we won’t get it back as a even a standalone game of story missions, is Bungie doesn’t want there to be too much free content. They don’t want people getting into a cycle of just waiting for expansion campaigns to become F2P, which they might be able to do if they’re already 3-4 years behind the latest expansion. And maybe this is one of many reasons.
-
Bungie doesn't care about their game.
-
The entire story has been building up since the beginning. Since we woke in the cosmodrome. New players won’t be able to understand everything if they just now are hopping in. They can easily read up on lore and watch the storylines of all the DLCs.

1 Replyjust watch a my name is byf video lol

I agree the new light experience could use some improvement however its not surprising. They are focused on creating new content and experiences for existing players. There's a reason the games as a service model isn't widely embraced by the gaming industry. Its difficult to manage while also keeping players happy and engaged.
-
The game is too big, it would take days to explain everything to a new light. Dumping you at the tower after a brief "teaser" is a great move, it's up to you from there.
-
There isnt, not even going to try to figure it out. I just play the things i like and go after the exotics etc i need and thats it.

Edited by Necrogen: 8/4/2022 12:52:31 PMYou have no idea what you're talking about when you mentioned D1 had better storytelling. D2 actually strings you along in a much more structured way. Itlf in fact you bought D1 and played it then you honestly already know what to do for D2 when you're starting over. You finish those missions and then it opens the game out to you. You know to use the directory and the directory tells you where to go and what to do. I don't think we need arrows highlighted in neon colors telling you where to move your eyes on the screen. I do love how when you're starting something new the tutorial portion comes up from the bottom of the screen and tells you what to do... But hey of course you don't mention that right? I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to direction.

10 Replies1. Bungie is rumored to be hiring people to address this issue. 2. Bungie is between a rock and hard-place. a. New players are stepping into a world where there is almost 8 years worth of content and back-story. b. The limitations of the game's design, won't allow it to keep all of that content and still have the game run on PS4 and XB1. Other MMO devs are running into technical problems trying to accomodate these obsolete machines (They're 10 years old...and were underpowered Day 1....now they're practically museum pieces) c. Its "damned if you do, damned if you don't." If you keep all of the content, you'll intimidate and frustrate people who don't want to claw their way through years of irrelevant content and just want to play with their friends. If you get rid of stuff, then you'll frustrate players like yourself who want to experience that so that they know the full story of the game. Then throw in the fact that the more old content you leave in, the more you break the immersion for current players. Because the world doesn't really change in response to what players do. So while I understand the frustration of newer players, one thing the DCV has done is vastly increase the feel that the game is an evolving-and-changing world. So while I'm sure there are BETTER answers to this than what's in the game right now...I don't think there are very many good answers to any of this. Not until enough PS5s and XBS X/S's are sold to actual users, so that Bungie can drop support for PS4 and XB1

1 ReplyBecause you had to be there to. Fully understand that Shaxx did the do with Mara and that his helmet stayed on. Completely relevant to the story and necessary to understand lightfall.

3 RepliesIts a live game. Plenty of other games do this too.
