In a word? No.
1. Strike Specific Loot became Nightfall weapons.
2. We do have vendor refreshes. The issue is that the game has DOZENS of vendors, and Bungie wants us getting our loot as drops. Not BUYING it in the Tower.
3. The Factions served no purpose in the game. They were just three useless vendors. They played an important role in D1 because the game had so little content that Bungie had to use them as a means to get us loot.
4. Faction loot was just reskinned versions of the gear from the previous DLC. Ornaments now serve that function.
5. Class-specific weapons were abandoned because of PVP....Tlaloc. It was the only decent class-specific weapon and it gave a bit of an advantage to Warlocks who used in Crucible....and PVP players complained up a STORM about how unfair it was.
So it put Bungie in the position of having to spend limited development resources on weapons that either weren't very good....so the balance of PVP was protected......
....or that were good, but would have to be nerfed soon after their release because of inevitable complaints from PVP.
It was an unwinnable game from their point of view....so they stopped trying to win at it.
Like what’s causing the difference between D1 and D2 as far as those things?
The game has gotten better, and Bungie has a better idea of how to design loot games.
People in this community tend to look back at D1 with a lot of nostalgia...and try to make a VIRTUE out of the necessities of POOR design. Destiny 1 was a fun action-game...but it was a REALLY poorly-designed RPG and loot game. But I think many people who played it didn't have a lot of experience with loot games, and didn't realize this.
...and Destiny 2 over the last three years has evolved in ways that a lot of shooter gamers don't like. So they look back on D1---remember only what it was at the end of Y3----and tell themselves that it was a better game than it really was.
I was here back then...and I remember how vicious the criticism was at the time.

Destiny feels like a mobile game sometimes. It’s a hamster wheel with no purpose. Too much is going on to keep the money rolling in and so none of it feels important or even significant at all. Everything is just diluted now. More reskinned, repurposed, rereleased loot with more RNG and more grind doesn’t make for a good experience. Twist it up in your mind to defend it however you have to. The overall player experience is going downhill. Games as a service needs to die off altogether. It’s the scummiest business model mainstream gaming has ever seen.

Edited by kellygreen45: 5/29/2022 11:35:29 AMOr you need to realize that these kinds of games aren’t for you. People are raving about Elden Ring, while I have NO intentions of ever playing it. Because I accept that those kinds of games have NO appeal to me, as I am not the target audience. I hate games that are ridiculously punishing by design. They cease to be a reasonable test of skill beyond a certain point. Fromsoft routinely crosses that line IMO. Grind games are not going to appeal to people who have brains that have a high need for new experiences. They get bored and frustrated when confronted with repetitive tasks. Which is fine…but I don’t. (I get angry and frustrated by games that are designed to force you to fail, and limit your play options by design.) All my other hobbies are things that I’ve done for many years and enjoy exploring their DEPTHS and either trying to master or use to explore my own creativity. Not everything is for everyone, and things aren’t bad just because they don’t appeal to you. Fromsoft games aren’t bad. I just don’t LIKE them.

The only thing that’s not better is armor design. There are some good ones in D2 but D1 had a lot more. I still like my titan and hunter look though.

Aside from the AoT sets setting a new standard for raid stuff that’s yet to be matched, I think it’s pretty even as a ratio of good to bad compared to d1. Plus the customizability is wildly better

Agreed.... ...but only to the point that D2 designs hang around FAR too long. There were some truly UGLY armor designs in Destiny 1, but the thing that made it better was that Bungie would change the design ethic pretty often. So if there was a set of armor that absolutely left you cold, wait a few months and it would be gone. But, OMG, the East Asian armor designs for Iron Banner hung around the game for FOUR FRICKING YEARS. I LIKE that armor style, and even I was getting tired of it by the end. >:(
