You find yourself standing in a great hall. A red carpet runs down its polished marble floors, leading to a throne atop a small staircase on the far side of the room. Upon the throne is a woman, with long golden hair, and a flowing white dress. Her blue eyes fall upon you with a gentle stare, accompanied by a soft smile, as she welcoms you into her castle.
“Since you have come all this way.” She says, calmly. “Allow me to reveal to you the Truth of this world.
Mortals are fleeting creatures. Their lives are short, and they have no purpose. They exist simply to exist, and then they cease to do so in the blink of an eye. To some, this is sad, to others, it is pathetic, to others still, an obstacle to overcome.
And yet, for all gods and immortals flaunt over mortal kind, I find they have one thing us gods never do.”
A blue crystal floats in front of you. Within its reflection, you can see the not so distant past; a glistening city underwater, a life taken both long past its expiration yet far too soon, a broken goddess who has long since given up on the world. But you see more than that, too. You see people, fighting together through their weakness. You see them help eachother, support one another in their darkest moments. You see them fight, give in to impulse, and make the wrong decisions. You see people.. Living.
“Mortals..” Aeon continued. “Persist in eachother’s memories. Their personalities shape one another, and their interactions keep their memory alive for long after they’re gone. It is a beautiful thing, how your kind supports one another, and keeps eachother afloat.
Gods like myself are not entirely foreign to the concept of companionship, but even the most intimate among us will never truly understand what it is like to be so loved. Because only when life is so short, do you truly cherish the things you hold dear.”
Aeon closed her eyes, and the crystal in front if you floated away. “The answer to your question may not seem entirely clear, but parse through my words, and perhaps you’ll find it.”
With that, you leave the self-proclaimed goddess, and exit the castle. Whether or not you have learned much on this adventure, you can’t help but feel charmed by her. Perhaps you should visit again sometime.
You step outside the castle, to find a cobblestone path weaving through a field of roses, dotted by the occasional oversized Jack-o-lantern. Walking through the garden, you also spot a gargoyle here and there, arching over the pathway, eyes following you as you walked.
Who would’ve figured the calm-spoken Aeon would enjoy such spooky decor?
As you call the narrator’s trustworthiness into question, however, the ground shakes, and one of the gargoyles springes to life, and leaps into the air! The stone gremlin lands in front of you and snarled, clearly not appreciating your comment!
