Destiny 2 Competitive is not competitive nor an enjoyable experience if not the worst ranked experience in the industry
The topic is long, but it proves a point.
Before I start I would just like to say that this is solely an exaggerated opinion with solely basic facts to support it. Feel free to post your comments and thoughts below, discussions always fun 😛
Feel free to skip this part as this is solely a credibility statement. For the past 2 years or so Ive been researching FPS Frameworks and gameplay and yotta yotta. Ive gone thru yknow the basics like COD and its predecessors, Battle Royale games (since it varies in the genre) and even to the extent of ROBLOX shooters (youd be surprised) Ive also taken a look at specific ranked and competitive experiences as well such as Riot’s Games (VALORANT, LoL&TFT), OW- pretty sure you get the gist here. Once again this is simply here for some sort of credibility, its not the greatest research but not that much is required to have an opinion on the topic of an awful comp system. Allow me to explain.
Theoretically the system Bungie put in place for a ranked environment seemed to be good on paper and completely functional. And sadly it is. With my experiences with Survival and Comp its never been good. Most of the time in ranked I play pretty decent/maybe top but alot of it Ive played trash and admit that I didn’t play as well as I could, but I accept alot of my losses and moved on, played another match. What I didn’t realize is what I described isnt a competitive experience at all. When I hear competitive you probably think of that top 1% battling it out to get that top spot and everyone is doing their best. Of course this isnt gonna happen as people relatively like to make bad decisions with their matchmaking choices (not an issue with Bungie). But whats more interesting is how common it is specifically here freelance and regular. The reasons could be split up like this- no incentive & rewards, indifferent gameplay and ranked model.
NO INCENTIVE
What is our purpose of doing comp again? For a number? I understand we get masterworking materials, situationally pinnacles and the unbroken seal (if you decide to waste your time doing so)- but thats it. Theres no other special factor that is offered in survival.
INDIFFERENT GAMEPLAY
Between quickplay and comp there are no differences in gameplay style and this characteristic is harmful for soloplay and freelance as specific maps and gamemodes are more catered towards (partied) team environments, and not random teams that you feel awkward comming with. Also to mention we havent gotten any new maps or switches in gamemodes since 4v4 Lockdown (Shadowkeep). Not gonna lie I kinda wanted that one back.
FLAWED RANKED MODEL
A question that I like to bring up is how we like to express how high we are in the skill chain and community. Yes we have KD, Trials resets (that is for another discussion, to summarize that is fs a competitive environment considering how much Bungie gives it love and attention and its weekly appearance) but nothing in comp says anything- legend resets maybe but even so thats still tedious and isnt a full representation of skill as you can literally just run jotunn in a team of 3 and you can secure a legend (not encouraging it nor is a good example just a brief example of how being queued up with a team gives a full advantage to those who arent). Heres something that bothers me however. Why on earth does a competitive system require a rank reset? With no rewards or incentive is it all considered a waste of time? Id like to hear what you think about this one.
Diversity is key in these factors as well as lots of games like to replicate others’ mechanics and systems for the ease of it and to ensure quality. This is unoriginal and somewhat unethical however it has perks to it as well. It can be improved from its predecessors or refurbished if a company felt it was lacking certain measures or mechanics from the game it was based on. I think Bungie needs to understand that copy and pasting the quickplay matchmaking and substituting it for a ranked environment is awful. Even with adjustments (if we ever get any), it still cant live up to other games if not even compete with skill factors others games provide.
In light comparison to other games Destiny 2 is a very very different game in comparison to what other FPS shooters are dictated towards as we have to mention theres a whole other side of Destiny that over powers the PvP community as a whole. Just as an example VALORANT (tactical shooter) its comp system is split into 8 different ranks with most having 3 tiers of advancement, dependent on placement matches. Why Bungie doesn’t implement placement matches in the first place baffles me.Through the games ranked existence its had a pretty stable matchmaking and queue system. Its been improved over the months and right now could be considered one of the best around specifically in the PC genre. Rank resets occur every Act (which is equivalent to a season) however they work differently as in Destiny. In destiny you drop right back to 0 and your progress is no longer worth mentioning. In Valorant you keep ELO and your rank is simply hidden until you play another placement. Both Riot and Bungie are very different in history and experience but regardless its still pretty sad- I think we can see who wins if we gave the industry a choice of whos better.
Anyways, thought it would just be great to share and practically vent just some of this. Hopefully gets some attention. If you got this far thanks for reading 😳
