Marilyn Dagon
Race: Fish Person
Appearance: Humanoid, but with light blue skin, and yellow eyes, and a tail. Lining the side of her forearms, back of her calves, and both sides of her tail are small yellow fins. And of course, she has gills on her chest, but they’re underneath clothing. On that note, she cannot wear tight shirts, because she needs water to flow through her gills when swimming.
Race notes: While she can breathe in air, it’s harder for her, so things that make it hard to breathe (like smoke) affect her twice as much. While not wholly cold blooded, she’s unable to maintain body heat as well as mammals, so she’s especially vulnerable to the cold. However she can breathe underwater indefinitely, and her scales make for a natural armor.
Occupation/backstory: She’s always been able to hear the souls of the dead, and has taken pity on those unable to pass on. Capitalizing on this, a (god of the dead/powerful mage/theme appropriate entity) gave her a magic lantern. Using this lantern, she guides lost souls to the afterlife. Mostly her efforts are focused underwater, but not entirely.
Gear: She voids fighting when she can, but shoukd she wind up in a scuffle, her lantern doubles as a powerful weapon. With it, she can summon aspects of those she’s helped move on, using their skills & abilities to help her in combat. Note, she doesn’t summon their actual souls, just look-a-likes.
(ex: she helps a knight move on, she can summon him to use his sword. What souls she starts with are up to you)
I want to say she can use her lantern to summon spirits of the recently departed, so she can, for example, interrogate the dead, but it may be too op if they ever need to solve a murder or something.
Personality: Spending so much time with the dead, she’s come to accept the inevitability of death. She can come off as rather grim, as she’squick to bring up our ultimate fate in a conversation, and doesn’t seem to upset when witnessing someone’s passing. However, she’s also kind, and compassionate, always willing to help someone in need. Whether they’re her mortal enemy, or best friend, she always tries to assist in a soul’s passing.

Looks good to me! For the summon dead ability, i think i'l sleep on it and see if we should incorporate that into the plot. There could be a draining effect on Marilyn if she activates it, or it could only apply to very recently dead, like only a few hours after they died, at most.

I was definitely only thinking a few hours, but even then. It could potentially be incorporated if the deceased doesn't know who killed them. Like, they could give a vague description of a robed figure, or just describe how they knew they were stabbed. Even, then, though. The main thing was the helping spirits pass, and then calling upon their aspects to help her fight. Thought the idea of a soul guide was pretty nifty. Like you're in the dark depths of the ocean, and you can just see her light moving through the water, with souls in tow. Also, for the record, I'm not actually 100% sure how she helps them pass on. I was kinda envisioning some sort of sacred ground she has to take them to or something. Maybe the world is dotted by places where the connection to the afterlife is stronger? I dunno. Something like that.
