I wasn’t expecting a ton of responses, but I was expecting more than one. Do we not have any Hollow Knight players hanging around anymore? Oh well, I guess I’lljust have to say my favorite Hollow Knight powerup, then. And my choice goes to the Dream Nail! The Dream Nail is a sword hilt that looks like a dream catcher. After charging it up for a second it creates an ethereal blade, which you’ll swing forwards in a quick slash, restoring your mana & reading the minds of anyone hit. Mechanically, it’s not that exciting. It’s essentially a key that lets you access certain areas. However, what makes it really cool is what these areas are; they’re the dreams of whoever you just hit. The Dream Nail is, essentially, a sword capable of cutting open a portal to the dream realm, and that is just awesome. Dream worlds are one of those things I’m super easily impressed by, and the idea of accessing them by cutting open an entry point with some magic sword is what makes the Dream Nail my favorite powerup in Hollow Knight, even though it’s rather plain mechanically speaking.

 • Ooh ooh, i'm a hollow knight player! My favorite powerup is the Voidheart. The dash is easily my most used power, and then the voidheart takes that and makes it a hundred times better. I also find that it makes the boss fights more intense because later bosses can move faster without punishing the player as hard.

 • Most platformers with a dash start out with it giving you some i-frames, so it was really strange that Hollow Knight didn’t. But honestly, it was kind of a genius move! For one, it kept the player from relying too much on the dash. In most platformers, your dash becomes the way to dodge moves, but in Hollow Knight it’s always just a backup, because it only starts making you invincible near the end of the game. But, even more importantly, omigosh is that such a power trip once you get it! Suddenly you don’t have to actually dodge every attack—now you can dodge through some of them! Even though Hollow Knight’s dash is kind of weak compared to, say, Ender Lilies, it just feels so much more powerful because, well, because it was pretty pathetic at first.
