• Do you remember the Aria of Sorrow map well enough to help me know where to go if I’m lost? I tried looking online, but I couldn’t find anything besides obnoxiously detailed full-game walkthroughs. >.< I just got the Undine Soul, for water walking. There was a fountain I could use to jump up and get to the floating gardens, but that wound up being a dead end, then there was that waterway at the beginning, but it just lead to a bonus room. All of the other paths I could find were also dead ends, so I’m completely stuck. Any chance you could help? >.>

It has been a hot minute since I played that game unfortunately since my emulator kept crashing 😭 (probably from too many rewinds and what not) so I don't recall much of the map. I know the area you're at, but I don't remember how to proceed through it. It's quite the tricky location. Edit: you've encountered areas that look like that, correct? Iirc, there's a pattern to how you're supposed to enter the rooms (don't quote me on that, like I said, it's been awhile 😅)

  • Darn, and my other Castlevania friend doesn’t know either. Guess I gotta look at one of those hyper detailed walkthroughs. -.- I will say I love the soul system just like I thought I would. Makes me tempted to go seek out a copy of Dawn of Sorrow, too!

  • DEFINITELY try to get DoS if you can! That game is so darn cool, I'm smiling ear to ear as I type this just thinking about it. You get these magic seal things that you have to draw in order to defeat bosses which was also extra challenging for me since I'm left handed. If there was a better way to play DS emulators on a phone or pc, I'd definitely be playing it right now. I should just pick up a DS at some point so I can play it again. I'm very bias towards DoS over AoS though 'cause I played the former first. I still like AoS, but DoS really took it to the next level.

  • My only concern with DoS is I don’t have good experiences buying used cartridges. A lot of the time they don’t work at best, and can seriously mess up the cartridge slot at worst. Do you know anywhere I could look to buy a copy?

  • I'm not sure as far as online goes, but you could try pawn shops or even thrift stores. I'd say game stop, but Idk if they even carry DS games anymore. Perhaps a local privately owned retro (even though DS isn't retro) game store.

  • Definitely not Gamestop. Never bought a used cartridge there that actually worked. Don’t know of any retro game stores nearby, either, so I suppose I’ll check ebay.

  • Double jump boots are always fun. It’s the most basic powerup, but going from being able to single jump to double jump is always pretty empowering. I like it when the double jump gives you a pair of ethereal wings. Don’t think I’ve heard of the Rock Wing. Where’s it from?

It's just what the super jump in Circle of the Moon is called. It's called something different in pretty much every Castlevania game. Hippogryph's soul in Aria / Dawn of Sorrow does the same thing.

  • Ah, I see. I’m surprised I didn’t know that, seeing as how I’m finishing up my Circle of the Moon run right now. :p I can’t wait to try Aria of Sorrow. Main reason I bought the Advance Collection. Soma’s soul steal thing sounds pretty nifty!

  • Those three games are easily my favorites in the series, no question. CotM holds so much nostalgia for me and it's very much still enjoyable for me to this day. It was my first GBA game and it's absolute perfection in my eyes. The music (although most of it just being remixes of previous Castlevania songs) is one of my favorite aspects of the game. I've actually learned some parts of a few songs on bass (The Sinking Old Sanctuary being one of my favorites). I can go on for hours as to why I love that game so much.

  • I’m still not a fan of the whip, which as your main weapon, does hold it back some. After I got the Mars card this complaint disappeared, but I didn’t get the Mars card until after beating Camilla, so it’s only made the endgame better. That said, even with the whip I’ve been enjoying it a bunch. I love the DSS system, and most of the bosses have been pretty fun. I just barely reached the Dracula fight earlier today, so I’m pretty close to finishing it up. I wish I could beat it 100%, but I doubt I’m good enough to complete that Battle Arena.

  • The whip is underpowered 'cause the DSS can make you so ridiculously op. I'm not going to spoil it, but there are actually some hidden mechanics with the DSS. Ugh, I freaking love that game! Aria / Dawn of Sorrow are close runner ups, but CotM easily takes the top spot as not only my favorite Castlevania game, but one of my top five favorite games in general.

  • I more mean I just hate the whip in general—regardless of its actual effectiveness. Even when it’s powered up by Venus/Thunderbird, it just feels so awkward. It’s a compaint I have with a lot of the Castlevania games. I’ve never liked the whip. I’m just about done with the game, so you can go ahead and spoil the DSS stuff. I actually kinda want to know what you’re talking about. :p On that note, actually, I don’t know if I’m going to bother, but there’s an achievement to collect all the DSS cards. I’m missing quite a bit; do you have any tips to colecting them?

Farm. It helps to approach these games like an rpg. Do you need to farm and grind? No. Does it help? Most definitely. Mars for example could've been acquired a lot sooner. Bloody Swords drop it at a 2.5% rate. While that's pretty low, some cards are worth going in and out of a room to respawn enemies and kill 'em until you get your desired item (this is easier for me though 'cause I grind and farm in pretty much any game that will let me, even if unnecessary. I think DMC3 is to blame for that, but that's a topic for another time). As for the hidden mechanics, they aren't necessarily hidden but the game never tells you (at least not in the original, can't speak for the one you're playing) how to actually use certain card combos, those being ones with Apollo, Uranus and Pluto + Salamander. You activate them and do seemingly nothing. However, if you put in a combination of directional inputs then attack, their power will be unleashed. I only found out abouts this years later when my sister was doing a playthrough of the game and was like, "Hey Steven, remember those cards you could never use? Watch this..." she found out from an guid on gamefaqs or something, but my mind was blown.

  • Yeah, I figured I’d have to grind, but I was hoping there was some way to make it easier. Ah well. I probably won’t bother, then. While I don’t mind light grinding—say, going for one or two cards—grinding them all out is probably a bit too much grinding for me. The game does & doesn’t tell you about the hidden mechanics. You can play through the whole thing just like the original if you’d like, but you can also use LT to pull up a sort of cheat sheet. Some stuff on there is pretty standard (save/load anywhere instead of just save points), but then you also have stuff like the rewind option, and an encyclopedia that tells you every item/enemy in the game. I think the directional inputs are on the encyclopedia, though it is worth noting I haven’t looked through it extensively.

The only things that make it easier are knowing what enemies drop what and where to find them. That and boosting your luck stat. And yeah, I figured the version you're playing would have something like that, but that wasn't in the original. Like every Castlevania game, there was the thingy in the menus that showed you how to double jump or use this or that, but nothing showing how to use the cards that need directional inputs or maybe I'm dumb and blind and simply overlooked it as a kid. Also, what you described sounds exactly like an emulator. Is that basically what that collection is rather than an actual port?

  • Using the in-game menus I don’t see anything that tells you what the DSS cards do until you perform them at least once, so yeah, I don’t think there’s anything in-game that tells you. I don’t really use emulators, so I couldn’t tell you. A lot of old games have a menu of a similar use, though, including things like the Mini SNES & stuff. From what I’ve seen there’s a rewind, a “snapshot”save, a replay feature, and the aforementiomed encyclopedia.

  • I see. Makes me wonder how anyone ever figured out how to use them in the first place. And yeah, I think things like the mini snes are just emulators (probably wrong though). I have a GBA emulator on my phone and it gas the same features sans the encyclopedia.

  • I don’t know how complicated the inputs are, but I know in SotN I found a few of the spells by accident. It’s not too unlikely someone would keep them equipped at all times to try and figure it out, and then pull it off by accident in the same way. Well, emulators and these old game collections do have the same goals in mind, so it’s not too far fetched to imagine they have the same features. Though, I also don’t know what considers something an emulator or not, so who can say?

  • It's relatively simple actually. Just down, left, right, up + attack button, so I could see how one might accidentally stumble across it or find it by experimenting. Come to think of it, an older player probably tried the Konami code then variations of it. I just know that as a kid, I was completely clueless and would have never considered that 😅. Easiest way to put it, it's an emulator when it runs a game or program that hasn't actually been ported to it. There's more to it, but that's basically the short and skinny.

  • Haha, reminds me of this game called Momodora. You could pull off a once-per-checkpoint super move by inputting something similar to the Konami code (no buttons, just the directional inputs). I had thought I knew almost everything about the game, then I watch a speedrun, and they pull that off and I was like “Whaaaaaat!?”. I think the DSS cards I would have never figured out are the ones that require you to get hit in the face with a particular element. Those are one of the few I looked up in the encyclopedia, mainly because I saw Neptune had “the potential of healing”, but I couldn’t figure out how to actually heal. :p Well, I’d assume it’s a legitimate port, but I suppose I couldn’t say for sure. I know they’ve ported other Castlevania games in the past, so it’d be weird if they just decided to emulate these ones.
