I’ve only seen it been done once, and it wasn’t bad. Only having one example, though, it’s hard to say for sure what my opinion on it would be.
I think if you’re putting a timeskip in the middle it has to represent a significant shift in the story. For most story mediums, a tonal shift is probabl what it’ll represent, but in games you could probably get away with it just being a mechanical shift.
Or, be NieR Replicant and do both.
