I believe the reason why d2 trials is in such a hellish place right now, is because the pool of players is diluted.
With no restrictions to the level to start your passage, you have the win traders at the first match ready for people to come in and cheat their victory. These people cause those that just start trials for the first time to turn away, as the very entrance as tainted with prophecies of fates/cheaters to come
Then you have the farmers, those that grab all the bounties for those tokens, and just farm their first opponents for kills/wins/revives/etc, after they already went flawless and have their loot pools expanded for the weapons they want. (This also counts those that delete their characters just to go at it again and get more bounties and more loot done)
Then you have players like we all are, who want to play with skill and ability alone, who start their cards to find that the pool you just jumped in hasnt been cleaned in months. You see the cheaters, you see the chat messages to win trade, you see the opponents who have gone flawless to the point their very title is gilded to mark that triumph, and you turn away.
I beleive, in the best interest of trials, is to return it to its roots. No more bounties, no more weekly missions for an engram, just straight, you have these cards you can choose from, good luck. With new cards/passages to purchase that are locked to you if you went flawless on that character slot!!! already. So those that have gone flawless that week, cant get the basic "forgive first loss" but an upgraded version of "forgive first loss" that once taken, matches you with other players who have these upgraded cards. (The upgraded cards would drop tokens based on the number of wins, with the flawless chest giving you 2-3 rank up worth of tokens)
Keeps the player pool fresh, keeps the tryhards to their seperate domain, and each weekend, you can go at your basic run, or run it again with a higher card to get tokens to get that god roll you want while keeping the same feel of, this is a challenge, this is intense, this is hell on earth, this is trials as it should be.
(This post is take from a conversation I had with a fellow in a different forum post entirely, that with a boost of confidence given, brought it to its own forum in an attempt to bring this idea of the "Upgraded card/passage" system to life, and what can be done to keep the pvp hell of trials alive!)
