Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Lordran with-

EH: "Hello, Chosen Undead."
. . .
Anyhow, anybody who's played Dark Souls I knows the Estus Flask system changed from 1 to 2. The question is simple; which do you prefer?
Explanations:
The kindling system:
In Dark Souls I each Bonfire had a "Humanity Level", that ranged from 1-4. Each Bonfire was at 1 by default (some were at 2), and could be increased by offering Humanity while human.
Each Bonfire only recharged you Flask to a certain amount, depending on that particular Bonfire's level.
1=5
2=10
3=15
4=20
The shard system:
In 2 & 3, you start with a set amount of Estus Flasks, and increase them by finding Estus Shards. All bonfires restore all Flasks:
My answer:
I prefer Kindling. Don't know why.
I tried the Estrus mod once. Once.

i like kindling better

Considering your spells are more dependent on flasks now the shard system seems about right. It seems to pace well with the progression through the levels and your character build. When we had kindling you weren't as dependent on flasks for spells so some areas may seem more worth it to kindle than others whereas in three you need those flasks for spells all the time. I'll say shard system for as long as spells require estus to use.

Kindling. I hate the grind of finding all the shares in 2 and 3, it's super annoying and feels pointless.
-
Kindling, but it's more convenient to use the shard system over kindling.

10 RepliesCollecting the shards was more tedious than killing Pinwheel then getting 20 free heals every bonfire, that's for sure. On a somewhat related topic, what the hell was with the "cast time" I guess you could call it, that they added to the flask in 2? That thing took forever to be used and often when I bothered trying it got negated or got me killed instantly. Using it in 1 and 3 was far more intuitive and far, FAR more useful because of how fast your use time and health was healed. I guess being able to move around a little in 3 is neat, but ultimately doesn't factor in much very often.

3 RepliesDefinitely kindling. At first i hated it, but now it puts me at ease for some reason. BB's was the worst imo. I was so stressed throughout about using blood vials.
-
1 ReplyI prefer kindling as well, so you could have like designated super-bonfires. 20 estus may have actually been too many though.
-
1 ReplyShards, but I wish each game let you go to 20 flasks total. That way I could have 15 Estus Flasks and 5 Ashen Flasks.
-
Absolutely shards. It took me forever to understand how to increase the amount of estus I could use in DSI, and then it'd depend on what bonfire you were near too. Shards is much more clear cut.
-
3 RepliesEasily shards, with kindling it's near impossible to die with 20 estus
-
3 RepliesKindling
-
Kindling, especially early-mid game. You had to strategically put humanities in bonfires you know you'll be frequently visiting or respawning at.
-
3 RepliesI prefer the shards and undead bone fragments. It simplified things without dumbing it down and made a steady progression route instead of rushing for the mid game.

8 RepliesEdited by OnlyAlfredo: 4/28/2017 2:55:27 PMNot shards, but the slower health regeneration from estus in DS2 makes estus spamming in pvp a nonissue.
-
2 RepliesKindling It made humanity relevant.
-
8 Replies20 estus every single time you got to a bonefire, it was almost impossible to die
-
11 RepliesSee I got so crazy obsessed with "Gittin guuuud" I accidentally managed to maintain 50 levels higher than the game wants me to be at all times.......flasks are either irrelevant for me or it takes at most 2 to heal when I really need to. I like the shard system especially since dark souls 2 took SOOOOOO LONG to use a single flask. Fresh experience that's perfect for agressive players looking to stay in the fight longer or give strategic players less to worry about when they're healing and planning their next encounter.

4 RepliesI like aspects of the shards but I don't think they should be hidden away and hard to find. I like the idea of getting more estus as you progress but not in a way of searching for it
-
7 RepliesKindling I miss everything about Dark Souls (1) If my old console still worked id be playing it over 3. Im hoping for an hd remake, same mechanics though

1 ReplyEdited by gsRuckus: 4/28/2017 5:16:52 AMPersonally I prefer Kindling. Although Exploration is a wonderful part of Dark Souls I don't like being at a disadvantage because I missed a specific illusory wall. That isn't to say that it doesn't work well, and I will add that i think it was done a lot better in Dark Souls 3. Though nothing changed about the system itself I feel the shards were placed in much better spots, and I think the starting and maximum counts were better along with the allotting system.
-
8 RepliesI think the shards were done really well, they gated the amount of recovery you should have at each stage so you felt a sense of progression throughout the game. Estus shards are also great for encouraging exploration. Just having 5 or 10 estus often meant you had way too much in DaS especially since you could get 20 at any time just by killing pinwheel.

4 RepliesDark Souls 3.

2 RepliesNo idea what this means, but have a bump, sir.
