IMPORTANT; please actually read the post and/or the tl;dr before posting. I have three questions for you, not just the one in the title. Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, with my hated enemy Pontiff Sully! Sully: "Please, Aifos, call me Sulyvahn. Now, back when I was still a young sorcerer from Ar-" Ooh, looks like we're out of time, Sully! Get off the stage, and never come back! Now, I brought Sullyvahn here, because he isa great example of an atmospheric boss. Walking into a grand cathedral, and having this dual-wielding bad-a pyrosorcerer start attacking us, with such amazing music! Ahh, it was quite incredible! However, there's few unique mechanics besides "hot him till he dies".
note; please do not scream at me about his unique moveset, or the clone mechanic. Of course a boss will always have something unique, but Soulsborne bosses in general tend to go for atmosphere.
Now onto our second guest; Kali Angel! Kali: *gurgle* *roooooar* Ew.. Now, spoilers for Gravity Rush 2;
The third fight with Kali Angel was just.. Weird. She turns into some gross blobby thing, and you gotta kick her eyes out.
This is a great example of a gameplay oriented boss! Atmospherically it was just.. Weird, but the actual gameplay of the battle was super fun, especially since there was a chain of human bosses before it. (most enemies in GR require hitting a weak point, but human bosses, you just hit 'em, and dodge until they die) Tl;dr? Here's my point! Here are my questions! 1. Who is your favorite boss atmosphere wise? 2. Who is your favorite boss gameplay wise? 3. Which do you find more important in making a boss enjoyable, if for some reason you can't have both? My answers;
Atmosphere wise; Hard to say, but it definitely goes to Soulsborne! So many awesome fights, like the Moonlight Butterfly, Ivory King, Vendrick, EVERYTHING from Bloodborne, Sully, Aldrich, etc. Gameplay wise; I love puzzle bosses, so this should go to something from Zelda or Darksiders, but the first thing that came to mind is from Gravity Rush 2; The fight against Durga Angel & Kali Angel. (the one right before the example above) Couldn't say why. It was just really fun. ^-^ Importance; For me, its atmosphere. As fun as my gameplay example was, nothing can compare to a really cool atmospheric boss to me, and gameplay oriented bosses like Kali(3) are really disappointing imo, and I tend to hate them until my second go round, where I know it's going to happen. Of course, having both is best!
