IMPORTANT; please actually read the post and/or the tl;dr before posting. I have three questions for you, not just the one in the title. Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, with my hated enemy Pontiff Sully! Sully: "Please, Aifos, call me Sulyvahn. Now, back when I was still a young sorcerer from Ar-" Ooh, looks like we're out of time, Sully! Get off the stage, and never come back! Now, I brought Sullyvahn here, because he isa great example of an atmospheric boss. Walking into a grand cathedral, and having this dual-wielding bad-a pyrosorcerer start attacking us, with such amazing music! Ahh, it was quite incredible! However, there's few unique mechanics besides "hot him till he dies".
note; please do not scream at me about his unique moveset, or the clone mechanic. Of course a boss will always have something unique, but Soulsborne bosses in general tend to go for atmosphere.
Now onto our second guest; Kali Angel! Kali: *gurgle* *roooooar* Ew.. Now, spoilers for Gravity Rush 2;
The third fight with Kali Angel was just.. Weird. She turns into some gross blobby thing, and you gotta kick her eyes out.
This is a great example of a gameplay oriented boss! Atmospherically it was just.. Weird, but the actual gameplay of the battle was super fun, especially since there was a chain of human bosses before it. (most enemies in GR require hitting a weak point, but human bosses, you just hit 'em, and dodge until they die) Tl;dr? Here's my point! Here are my questions! 1. Who is your favorite boss atmosphere wise? 2. Who is your favorite boss gameplay wise? 3. Which do you find more important in making a boss enjoyable, if for some reason you can't have both? My answers;
Atmosphere wise; Hard to say, but it definitely goes to Soulsborne! So many awesome fights, like the Moonlight Butterfly, Ivory King, Vendrick, EVERYTHING from Bloodborne, Sully, Aldrich, etc. Gameplay wise; I love puzzle bosses, so this should go to something from Zelda or Darksiders, but the first thing that came to mind is from Gravity Rush 2; The fight against Durga Angel & Kali Angel. (the one right before the example above) Couldn't say why. It was just really fun. ^-^ Importance; For me, its atmosphere. As fun as my gameplay example was, nothing can compare to a really cool atmospheric boss to me, and gameplay oriented bosses like Kali(3) are really disappointing imo, and I tend to hate them until my second go round, where I know it's going to happen. Of course, having both is best!
In terms of atmosphere, damn near any Zelda game for me; fighting Ganon(dorf) never ceases to feel anything less than climatic. And Kefka in FFVI, between "Dancing Mad" and the Dante's Inferno theme and the trial of mini bosses before him; 16-bits has rarely been that epic (imo anyway). Gameplay wise, my favorite is Deathstroke in Arkham Origins. Sure, it boiled down to a quick time event; but damn if it wasn't fun. Psycho Mantis and The End come to mind too. I value gameplay more, but the final boss must be atmospheric.

    Atmosphere: The first fight against Dark Samus in Metroid Prime 2. Between the amazing theme song, the tension you feel between the two through pure body language, and the way the balance of power has changed since last you met. Makes for a really good encounter. Gameplay: Ornstein and Smough from Dark Souls. The balance between slow and heavy and fast/light, then the dynamics completely changing in phase 2...a really good boss design. Alternatively, I could give it to every boss from Furi, because their boss design is phenomenal.

    • Atmosphere: Gwyn. That music gets me everytime. Gameplay: Orphan of Kos. It's just so frantic and fun. I think a balance of both is important.

        • I loved the atmosphere, gameplay, and music of the Dancer of the Boreal Valley boss fight. So mesmerizing... Until you get picked up and get a sword through you. As for which one I prefer, I'd say gameplay. If the boss mechanics are boring, then the fight is boring to me. Also, -blam!- you Pontiff.

            Atmosphere wise, the hive mind of dead space 1 was great. Mechanic and gameplay wise it was "shoot the weak spots when the boss exposes itself" but because this boss fights you just after killing someone who just backstabbed you it makes it feel more intense. The part where it picks you up, hangs you upside down and inverts your aiming before trying to eat you is really well done in making you fear for your life and developing the classic dead space atmosphere. Gameplay wise, however goes to Blizzeta from twilight princess. On top of fighting a character you had just been getting to know and tried (key word there) helping you, the boss fight does an incredible job with using ice reflections to dodge icicles from the air. The attack afterward is a circular trap of icicles, and it will be unavoidable damage if you didn't break any icicles after the short time period (using the ball and chain, item from the dungeon) of the last attack. The circular shape falls first and there'll be an opening based on the broken icicles, giving you time to dodge and deal damage to the boss. Question 3:
Personally it depends on the game. In a Zelda game, please give me the most complicated and dynamic boss. In horror games like Resident Evil 7 or dead space, the atmosphere of the fight is more critical than it is the mechanics of it.
• For bosses I like a mix of gameplay and atmosphere. Few games accomplish this, but I got a really good kick out d Titanfall 2.

            • Soundtrack>atmosphere>gameplay for my boss battles. Gears of War 2 fighting the leviathan on the way to nexus. You're on a boat, in the middle of nowhere in a underground lake/ocean(?). Next thing you know the two creatures moving the boat disappear with a blood trail left behind, you're just thinking "oh helllll no". Next thing you know your attacked by giant tendrils. Only way to get them off the boat is by chainsawing them off. Big bad monster gets salty and makes its move by appearing and chomping on the boat. Then you shoot it in the eye. It opens its mouth and you gotta kill it from the inside. You go in there and gotta shoot these blue tendrils inside. Do that and then it's throat hole opens up. You gotta throw in the young bolt Grenades. Don't miss, as it can Fvck you bad. Do these steps a few times based on difficulty. A great ost plays. Starts of ominous then begins to quicken as you only have a few chances to beat the monster. If I wasn't at work I'd link this Ost, but breaks about to end

                Alright Aifos, you want it? Here we go: First off with favorite atmospheric boss I would have to go with Champion Gundyr, why? Because fighting an old enemy with new tricks (or is it old tricks?) has always been a favorite of mine. Plus seeing the tutorial area blanketed by a pitch black sky, signaling that Gundyr failed to do what he was destined to do, shows how much more capable you really are than him. He may be physically stronger than you, but you have something that he doesn't. You're destined to beat him. For gameplay, the first boss that came to mind was from a little Mega Man ripoff named Rosenkreuzstilette, basically Mega Man but with magic waifus. The boss that came to mind was DIO...I mean Sichte Meister...She uses a basic attack reminiscent of Kakyoin, being his Emerald Splash. After that if you are a certain distance away from here, she'll freeze time, and then jump at you to try and damage you by contact. After she drops below half health she'll fire more for her "Emerald Splash", she'll always freeze time, and when she does, she manifests a lot of knives which home in to the player. Importance. A boss with good atmosphere and bad gameplay is boring, but one with good gameplay but bad atmosphere becomes awkward. A balance is required for a truly great boss. But the question was which is more important so I won't give you a cop out "they are both equally as important. I would have to say that Gameplay would be more important. Why? Because a boss with good atmosphere, which includes lore in my opinion, and bad gameplay becomes the Covotus Demon. Decent lore and atmosphere, a man so infatuated with Mythra he stayed with her even after he became the bootleg Jabba the Hutt he is, remaining at the base of her domain, is the joke of DS2 for being too easy. Tl;dr? 1. Champion Gundyr 2. DI-I mean Sichte Meister 3. Gameplay because Covotus Demon

                  • An important thing that makes a boss fight memorable is the soundtrack. The moment you step in the boss area, you listen to that music and you get goosebumps you know that you will remember that boss for a long long time.
