Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you a-live from none other than Russia! I've always wanted to go to Russia, and unfortunately that dream is still on hold, because rather than actually being there, I am only there fictionally, with Nikolai and Anastasia in Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia.
But dreams to go to Russia aside, Assassin's Creed is a perfect example of real locations in a fictional world.
An example of the opposite would be something like Elder Scrolls, wherein Nirn is not Earth (obviously).
Tl;dr? Here's my point!
My question to you today, general populace of the #Gaming subforum, is which do you prefer?
Do you like twists on history (like AC), or predictions of the future (like Fallout or Halo), or do you prefer visiting worlds created in the writer's minds (like Bloodborne, or Elder Scrolls)?
My answer:
I prefer purely fictional worlds, especially when they're fleshed out, as I always find them so fascinating!
Edit; this is not a question of fiction vs nonfiction. It is referring to specifically whether real locations appear in fictional worlds.
Edit 2: I am not asking where you'd want to live

2 RepliesYou're asking this question on a forum where most members live and breathe videogames. Or act as responsible members of society, working and earning a living, paying taxes, taking the car to wash once every other week. Sexting. Hooking up, nreaking up, repeating all of above. But still breathing videogames while doing these inane stuff. What manner of close results will there be to your poll...I wonder

1 ReplyI like both just as much actually. The little twist on history is probably my biggest reason for loving the Assassin's Creed franchise so much. Whenever I play a new AC game for the first time I think "ok, this all probably didn't happen exactly like it does in the game, but wouldn't it be cool if it did?". On the other side of the spectrum, the fictional worlds created by the developers can be really amazing to explore and immerse yourself in. I find it cool how creative some of the writers can be when creating entirely new things.

4 RepliesWell, what luck! I am there too, but me and the squad need to save the world from the zombie apocalypse caused by group 935 and there are dragons and fire and guns and ECKSPLOAZHIONZZZZZ!!!!111!

Fictional is usually cooler than real. Usually, but not always.

Edited by Psychic Donuts: 10/12/2016 10:28:44 PMFictional worlds can be really cool, but sometimes the urgency and intensity in games comes from the fact that what is happening is totally plausible or it is affecting the world that we all know so personally. It really depends on the game type.

I feel that it's neat to explore a fictional take on a real location. I like it. Buuut... when you have the power of God in your hands, to create anything you could ever wish to be explored, why recreate that which already is? Why not build something that will put the Himalayas to shame? An underwater city, a world with two moons, is anything unachievable? The answer? Only if you think it so.

All of them, specially futuristic.

1 ReplyPersonally, I prefer fictional. I'd also argue predictions of the future (like Halo) would fall under this category. The only thing I don't really like is when history or classic stories are changed (ex: God of War). It feels kinda simultaneously lazy and arrogant to me; like saying "Oh, yeah, I could totally improve on centuries of established literature... but really, I can't come up with my own idea." I don't mind creating a legend within a legend (Kratos was used by Ares and seeks revenge), I just dont like the "The story you know is wrong. This is the TRUE story." narrative (Kratos kills Ares, then Zeus and becomes king of the Gods).
-
No preference. If the narrative, characters and game play is good. Real versus fictional becomes irrelevant.
-
I think I prefer fictional but it really depends on the game.
-
Fictional!
everyone likes a little "out of town" strange
3 RepliesMy only wish is to live in the world of star citizen (30th century Milky Way Galaxy, mankind has made contact with various alien life forms, is at war with one, and another one seems too be gearing up for a mass invasion. Kinda realistic alt future history). To bad the Single Player campaign was delayed indefinitely, at least we got another cool demon I suppose.

Fictional if it's well done. It amazes me how people can create an entire world with races different lands and lore
-
I'd like to live in the Ace Combat worlds, I wouldn't need to be an ace just being a pilot would be enough. Then I'd finally be able to fly the Su-47.
-
1 ReplyI like real locations based in the future

9 RepliesEdited by The Dovahk: 10/11/2016 10:27:34 PMI'd pick the Mass Effect Universe.

1 ReplyUsually fictional depictions of real places are pretty boring. Why does every bad thing happen in New York? The only fictional depictions of modern cities I really like are Seattle in Infamous: Second Son and New York in Spiderman 2. The cities perfectly compliment the powers of their heroes. That, and Seattle is just really pretty.

1 ReplyReal world doesn't have catgirls and hot alien chicks, so I'm gonna go with option 2
-
1 ReplyRelevant.
-
Real life is boring and mundane
-
4 RepliesI can become so deeply interesting in detailed fictional worlds like Halo and Dark Souls. The imagination of it all is so interesting. I love it. The real world, in comparison, is very bland.
-
1 ReplyFictional, and what's with the roleplay stuff you've been putting at the start of yours threads?
-
1 ReplyEdited by moist nana: 10/11/2016 11:28:29 AMWell technically any games that's not a full on historical simulator is fiction. But i do think realism adds to a games immersion 10x. For me, i'm much more amazed by actual human feats than any made up stuff and 99% of the time it has a better story aswell. But i do like when fiction eleborates on RL historical events like AC and the mystery of the Assasins AND in Game of Thrones you can see it's heavily influenced by The War of the Roses

1 ReplyI play videogames, read books, and watch anime to escape the real world, not have a history lesson.
-
7 RepliesI would have to pick fictional all the way. My favorite fictional world would be Tolkien's Middle Earth. I actually have a tattoo with Sindarin script created by Tolkien. After that I would pick the world in a song of ice and fire. For a video game/book series I would pick the world of the witcher.
