Destiny's Loot System and Behavioral Science/Psychology

What's up guys! It's been a long time since I've posted something on Bungie.net, but I've been really busy researching all of the layers to this video, focusing on the science behind Destiny's reward system. We got a taste of it when John Hopson told the audience at GDC 2015 that Bungie used behavioral psychology to make Destiny's loot based game addicting, but the science goes much deeper than that. I hope you guys enjoy this video, and I'd love to hear your feedback. Thank you!

  • Your video is very well done & well-informed, but I do have 1 problem with it. Bungie definitely still focused on the "30 seconds of fun" part of their game, & expanded on it. The crucible still has those intense moments, & halo never had an activity as big or complex as a raid. Also public events & strikes may get repetitive eventually, but they were still revolutionary for a Bungie title.

  • I have every exotic and most of the chase items in Destiny. I just play for fun now. I think designing games that are fun is important. hunting loot is fun for a lot of people. Engineering games to be fun and feel rewarding is fine. At no point has Destiny taken my money to give me gear I needed and that's fine by me.

  • Well, that is disturbing to say the least. Kinda puts some validity (not a lot, but some) in the whole "Bungie/Activision is in it for the money" and "Bungie/Activision does not care about the players" arguments. I was already not going to pre-order Destiny 2 because of how disillusioned I became with TTK. Now I am definitely not putting the money into it at all unless it proves to be a rapid departure from the "Make addiction, not fun" mind set (Not to say I did not have my fair share of fun and good times). I already held off on pre-ordering The Division give the similarity of the two and the grievances I have currently with Destiny (And I have been looking at the Division since it was announced way back in 2013, before I even learned about Destiny). Actually, looking at its loot system might be an interesting idea for another Video Game Science video after The Division has been out for a little while if you plan on making this a series. Otherwise, interesting video. It is good to hear someone actually reference the DSM when talking about metal disorders.
