The Boss Fight is probably my favorite thing about gaming

Picture it: You’ve just fought and looted your way through the deepest dungeon, and enter into a suspiciously large room where a bounty of treasure lies. Before you can claim it, you hear a bonechilling roar emanate from the roof above, and the head a massive dragon emerges from a hole in the roof proceeding with the rest of the beast crashing through. You grip your blade tightly, and prepare for a fight. Boss fights such as this almost always are accompanied by an epic soundtrack to set the tone of the fight, and the most notable ones always have unique mechanics to them that you can master, and thus make quick work of the boss. Some boss fights include phases where the boss disappears or shields himself to recuperate and sends its minions to face you (and for you to stock up on health potions). Some boss fights have quick-time events challenging your reflexes and rewarding you with an awesome attack animation on the boss. These often challenging encounters have become the ultimate way to end the story of a video game, and often serve as the climax or breaking point, although some are followed by a GTFO sequence, such as Halo’s Warthog Runs. Truly, some of the best moments in gaming is finally defeating that one impossible boss after trying 50 times, either alone or with friends. So I now ask you: Which boss fight in gaming has become your favorite?

  • I know it’s Density, but the Atheon boss fight from D1 Vault of Glass will always be iconic in my mind. The amount of mechanics going on in the fight makes it a whirlwind of activity. Also the Ardyn boss from Final Fantasy XV. The fact that you pretty much fight a mirror of yourself is cool enough, plus (if you’re on level, not over leveled) it’s a fairly challenging fight. However, nothing will stand up to the Dungeons & Dragons boss fights that I’ve done. The Cyanwrath fight in Hoard of the Dragon Queen (in addition to Glazel if you fight him), Aurinax in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, The Black Spider from Lost Mine of Phandelver, Strahd from Curse of Strahd, D&D is filled with EPIC boss fights. Some have special mechanics, some don’t, some are more ability checks and saving throws than attacks rolls, and some still are massive “you versus an army” fights.

  • The first thing that comes to mind is Star Dream Soul OS from Kirby: Planet Robobot. A Galactic Nova, repaired and repurposed into the planet sized space station known as the Access Ark. There’s a lot to love about this fight, from it’s soundtrack, to the gameplay, its role in the story, and the lore behind its creation is all phenomenal. Sadly, I don’t have time to go into detail.

    •
Which boss fight in gaming has become your favorite?
I know a lot of people dislike them, but personally I love the boss fights in Super Metroid. While it's true they're basically just big damage sponges, that doesn't bother me as much as it usually would because: A) That encourages you to engage with the point of Super Metroid, i.e. exploring the alien world in order to upgrade your tools and abilities, and gather more health packs and missiles, in order to become the biggest threat on that planet. Which also means that, while something like Kraid is technically a bullet sponge, you can take him down in a few seconds if you're experienced enough. B) They're so damn cool! Every boss in Super Metroid is just an awesome set piece, with excellent visual design and really cool and interesting attacks. The best is a tie between Kraid, Ridley and Mother Brain. I'd probably have to give it to Mother Brain though, since that ending was mindblowing, and almost singlehandedly made Super Metroid my favourite game, not to mention how much it changed the way I view the medium.

      I do like boss fights a lot, but what I absolutely hate is when they throw some low level enemies at you at the same time, so you can’t give your full attention to the main boss and end up dying far more than you should.

          my favorite boss fights of all time are the witcher 3's, everything about them is perfect, from the story build up & music to the outlandish/otherworldly appearances, and most importantly the challenging combat. i want to FEEL that the skill I've built up is being put to use edit:worthy mention are souls games, but dying to the same boss 60 times kinda kills the vibe. that's why i like witchers the best

          For the "easiest boss", the Ancient Wyvern in Dark Souls 3. Literally climb the map and crit the head for a one shot. The fact I missed his head on the first try was frustrating... For "favorite solo" I'd say Nameless King. That took about a good 6 hours of move set downloading... Satisfying kill though. Did a small 1 second dance For "hardest, but I hate it" boss Darkeater Midir that SOB... That boss took the Longest of them all For overall looks and impression ima say Sister Friede & Father Ariandel Sick cutscenes, surprise mechanic, and Sister Friede
I only talk dark souls 3 cause that's what I think when I think "boss battle" and it's the only SoulsBorne game I've played... God I wanna play Bloodborne ;-;
• I like the boss fights where the boss doesn't bother sending minions. Just them vs. Me.

          Freedom Wars had some fun fights. It's a pipe dream but I really wish they'd do a sequel on the PS5 (Soul Sacrifice too).

        • I've got a lot of favorites. Sisters of battle from hollow knight, abyss watchers from DS3, and the child from othercide are the big ones in recent years for me.

          • Ludwig in Bloodborne. Fought him in early game for a Holy Moonlight Sword build and his fight is much more intense and fun when the margin for error is dangerously small. Also coolest cutscene points go to him. I just think he’s the perfect boss for a game like Bloodborne, where you fight aggression with proactivity. Another one that comes to mind is the Burnt Ivory King from DS2. Not only a somewhat difficult fight if you’re not careful, but also just really cool mechanic-wise. He also has one of the best, if not the best, boss arenas out of all the bosses in DS2. Everything about the fight is so epic. And lastly but not least, Sister Friede, mister “Your Dark Soul, give it to me”, and Champion Gundyr in Dark Souls 3. Sister Friede’s fight never gets old for me, and I just like the fast pace of the fight as a whole. Gael’s fight is just insanity incarnate by the third phase, but I never really feel cheated in his fight despite his wide array of attacks. He just feels so damn fun to fight. Champion Gundyr gives you almost no downtime whatsoever (unless you’re a parry god). It’s a fight where stamina regen feels like it takes hours rather than seconds. Once again, I very much enjoy the pace of the fight, since playing defensively will most likely get you killed in the fight. The fight is also hella tense, and there’ve been moments where I survived by a sliver of health, praying that I could get a single chug of estus off before he could catch up to me. Tl;dr, Soulsborne bosses are pretty good. Except for Royal Rat Vanguard. -blam!- Royal Rat Vanguard.

              The King of the Dead in the Return of the King game on the original Xbox. Man, I can’t get over how good that game was. I personally prefer horde sections/modes over boss fights, though.

              • Kael Thas from WoW was a top tier fight. So was Malganis - short fight without many mechanics, but what timers did exist were rapid and punishing. Tanking it I just felt like I couldn't exhale for 4 minutes.

                  The final boss in dead space 1 on my first playthrough left me shook, to the point where the jump scare at the end almost gave me a heart attack.
