Destiny 2 is not getting a new engine

So all you idiots thinking that they were taking away stuff just repurpose it with a new engine were wrong. They are just taking it away to seek it back to us later.

  • 100% a p2p hosting issue that can’t be avoided unless they switch to a high tick rate dedicated server I.e. they chose p2p because it’s massively cheaper and most players will still play regardless They also balance connection based matchmaking with skill based, to try to create the best player experience possible under the circumstances

  • They changed the engine so old content was super buggy so instead of delaying the DLC again they just removed it. We will never see those raids again unless they resell them.

  • I laughed at that. People still think Bungie would use logic and fix 90% of their issues at once. A new engine & D3 is so, so obviously the common sense and correct choice. Beyond Light is basically D2.5. They've already told you that, 6 weeks before launch and despite delays, to expect significant bugs. So the delay wasn't to fix bugs. Bungie has all but flat-out said in plain English that they're too lazy.

      •
They are just taking it away to seek it back to us later.
Most I people I know all agreed we were getting an engine rework, not a full blown new engine (seriously guys it takes like 3-4 years of dev time just to create a brand new engine). Does this mean its still bad that they are taking it all away? Not really. The cosmodrone is a free update so it means so far they have yet to pull the "resell what you already paid for" card yet. (Make sure they don't pull that). However, my concern is the lacking paid content. It feels like I am paying too much for too little while free content is being more plentiful. Concerning.

          • People expected a whole new engine for beyond light? Is that what im getting from this? Haha That would be an immense amount of work to move to a new engine now.

            • From what I gathered here's my best explanation using star wars lore Y wings (fighter bombers in the clone army which had tons of funding /resources) in the clone wars had armor plating which was nice shielding but when it came to repairs it took forever to do so because its armor needed to be removed and in reality didn't provide much more protection if they weren't in place. Destiny 2 currently has "armor" thats kinda pointless at the moment and makes doing maintenance time consuming and costly Y wings in the rebels hands (a small group that didn't have tons of funds or personnel) flew the same bombers without the thick armor to allow for faster repairs and less time needed to maintain them because the armor wasn't needed to be removed each time. Destiny 2 according to Bungie without all the armor in the way will be faster and cheaper to maintain but it won't lose its effectiveness as a good game. Tldr: bungie is simplifying the game to make maintenance easier and cheaper to do (which hopefully means faster balancing patches)

This was a given, but what's funny is all the nonsense that I have read about how "The TWAB" said this or that about their engine that it's the exact same BS the same people and Bungie said before D2 released. You guys on this forum trying to defend this aren't fooling anyone because all the issues D1 had were brought over to D2 and all the issues D2 has isn't going to go away just because this company makes promises, especially knowing they make a lot they can't keep. They are working with the same engine from what, 1990's if not earlier? A lot of the issues this game has are not going to go away because they remove content. Bungie is working with an outdated engine that has major issues that some of them they literally can not fix that they caused in this game for using an outdated engine.

              • Don’t mistake cheap marketing and the like FOMO strategies with facts. Anyone with a positive IQ knows Bungie is taking away a lot of the game and replacing it with SK 2.0/cosmodrome and Europa with only originality and probably content is storm yeah!!! 1 strike, 6 lost sectors or the like boring must do’s, 2 weeks of grinding power levels and pass with the same activities but less maps, 1x day one cleared raid by a bunch of no skilled first basement advantage tomatoes who got insider info and are just as good actors as their pvp skills. Now players who only have destiny as refuge from the world don’t need to BS and can simply admit it, that’s ok, this game is still fluid, requires little focus, nice colors, nice movements, but clearly no need to invent crap that will only deceive.

              • Did anyone really think that? I mean, we weren’t getting D3, and a new engine should be one of the big assets that a D3 would garner. Then again it’s clear D2 didn’t get a new engine, as all the recycled (ahem... certified pre-owned? Not gently used?) D1 content has made abundantly clear. Maybe all this retooling will give us a platform that can carry us forward. I’m skeptical until I hear absolutely slobbering reviews though, and probably won’t be kicking the tires in this “brave new” D2.5 (D1.5.1?) until hear some decent rumblings.

                    • Honestly, I don't give a rat's turd about game engines and game technology. I'm a consumer. I'm just a costumer, a patron who buys what you're selling, consume it and observe if I like what I'm buying or not. If I go to a restaurant where I like the food, but they can't serve me the food that I liked or paid for because their oven or griller is broken, I don't go to their kitchen and start asking what the hell is going on in here. It's none of my effing business. If I go and pay for a buffet, but I could only eat rice and nothing else because the main dish can only be accessed in a different room (Sunsetting) and then once I got all the food on my plate, they're gonna take half of the food from my plate away that I've already paid for (Content Vault!) I don't care what's happening in your kitchen Bungo. All I care is can I still eat the stuff I've paid for and not taken away from my plate while I'm eating?. . .

                      • I think this was implied when Bungie used the same engine in D2 that they had in D1. And since Bungie isn’t making D3 anytime soon, and they are continuing to build on the foundation of D2. Having said that, ‘Engine’ is a generic term used to describe a bunch of different development tools working together. Software is always getting updated ( new versions of old tools ), so hopefully we’ll see some improvements somewhere down the line. And the increased performance of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S should hopefully mean that the console versions of D2 will no longer run like ass.

                        • I don’t think they are getting a new engine but more like an overhaul of the current one. Sure they could be taking out crap just to put it in but also as they said in the Twab some things had to be taken out because of these changes. The same could be for Forges and Menagerie but we don’t know. Plus I’m fine with them bringing them back because we aren’t paying for them. Sure I did buy them when D2 launched but I don’t really give a shit. All content that is going into the DCV is non payed for stuff. Yeah and I know “BUT I PAYED FOR ORIGINAL D2 AND THE ANNUAL PASS FOR FORSAKEN!!” They made it free a year ago get over it. Still DCV content will not be gained by selling. They are just bringing things in and out of the game and those will be free for players.

                        • From what I understand they are changing some of the scripting environments so quests can be more dynamic and have more access to the game state. They are removing content because they couldn't reasonably refactor the original infrastructure to work with this change. First I have heard of a new engine.

Ignore OP for bashing everyone because Bungies piss poor job of explaining things. The breakdown( in layman’s terms) on what’s really happening to the current Engine. https://youtu.be/66sPl-_kOJo If you’re truly interested watch the whole video. (it starts of a little slow) but they do explain what’s going to eventually happen with all the upcoming changes. And why it’s a good thing. * Explanation time stamp starts @ 7 minutes!
