[Dy2 Renegades] Please add choices for story progression and non-mission quest-step skipping (Tharsis Bazaar thievery moral conundrum and campaign timesinks)
Dear BUNGiE, the StarWars collaboration in Renegades is nice; I congratulate the hard work (and rework) by hundreds of dear developers. I loved the first mission of Renegades, but I stopped playing the campaign upon reaching the “Tharsis Bazaar scrap mercantile searched” objective due to the moral conundrum of robbery or theft.
You have players of every color, flavor and fragrance; I specifically am a great enjoyer of immersion (the reason why I prefer FPS to 3PS), and I take my values with me wherever. I understand that not every Guardian is The Young Wolf (there's only one), but playing the story of The Young Wolf has never shattered my immersion as the forced “commit robbery or say bye-bye to the Renegades story and the Praxic Blightsaber” quest-step. It would be nice if I could totally separate The Young Wolf (being written as the protagonist anti-hero and now also a thief). As much as I'd like stories to contain less anti-heroes and for us to go back to fiction-writing high moral beacons like Luke Skywalker (ref: The Importance of Luke Skywalker at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvlWSsZwLn0), I cannot skip such blemishes because there is no feature to skip non-mission quest steps. I completely understand that missions themselves are fine and do not need to be skippable but minor “press E here” actions, dialogue and now story-bound immorality in questing should be made skippable.
Most players probably did not notice this issue and to anyone that is not paying attention to the morality of choices they make their Guardians take, it's not as bad. I firmly believe that people who are unaware that something is bad, immoral or evil, and commit such a thing, are not as much to blame as others who are fully aware of the immorality or evil of a decision. I am not innocent or ignorant to the evils of stealing, and neither are most governments and societies (thankfully), and I could not take such an action in ignorance even if I wanted to; it's too late for that!
Please consider players like me and do not compel us to be immoral or to sin just because some storyteller thinks that necessary sins exist or necessary immorality exists.
Per the title of this open letter sent as feedback, this is a feature request to add more player agency in story choices and story paths, plus the additional feature of skipping minor (non-mission) quest-steps.
Thank you for reading this! For those really interested in more of my personal tastes and decision-making, a short Expected Q&A session follows.
—E.
--End of open letter--
~~~~~~~~
Q1: Guardian, you have abandoned the Renegades story; does that mean you do not recommend Renegades?
~A1: I still expect there to be value in enjoying other Renegades content and perks (such as weapon unlocks and the dungeon due to how Dy2 expansion unlocks work, though I'm well aware that some activities like Renegades' “Gambit 2.0” will likely remain locked for me, a Gambit 1.0 enjoyer).
Q2: Guardian, are you still a combined Destiny and StarWars fan?
~A2: Yes! :D (but not blindly so, nor deafly so).
Q3: Guardian, you've claimed that you think it's not that bad for other players to commit immoral actions if they're ignorant of them, so since you're not ignorant of that, how would it be for you personally to steal that item in the quest-step you mentioned?
~A3: Being an immersion-loving videogamer and Role-Player, it would be both against my character's personality and my own personal convictions (ref: the first epistle to the Corinthians, by Paul of Tarsus, on thieves and their inheritance).
Q4: Guardian, how could this issue affect our fellow players, Destiny 2, or even BUNGiE in the long-term?
~A4: I have seen and believed in the principle of reaping-what-we-sow; if BUNGiE tells their fellow players (especially the young audience) that the greatest protagonists should be prepared to lie, cheat, and steal, then how can they expect some players to not lie to BUNGiE (or about BUNGiE), to not cheat (with hacks or horrible exploits), and to not steal from BUNGiE or their fellow players (or even from their relatives and loved ones)?
Q5: Guardian, so what reasons did you buy Renegades for?
~A5: To play its activities and Gambit 2.0 with my beloved friends, sibling and my clanmates in general, and to get the Praxic Blightsaber that is now locked behind a sinful choice for my character, which my character shall not break Role-Play to commit.
Q6: Guardian, are you sure you will miss out on the Renegades story just because you won't press E to an immoral action or a sin, if BUNGiE does not provide an alternative or the skip feature?
~A6: Yes, quite sure. I personally follow Jesus of Nazareth since I was 19, and I'm not ashamed of His good news about a flawless and bigger New Earth without pain, suffering or tears, for those to follow Him in everything (including in videogaming); I want to get there in real life and if I were a Guardian and the Destiny universe were real then I would still want to get there, and I'm not going to easily let an “ends justify the means” stance to stain my conscience and grieve any hearts whatsoever. I also loved Luke Skywalker since I was a child, and Luke Skywalker would never steal.
Q7: Guardian, what Destiny in-universe takeaway do you point to the most:
~A7: Not all Guardians are Renegades, and a Renegade is not necessarily a Guardian. The Young Wolf is being written to be both, I guess (and an anti-hero protagonist instead of a hero protagonist).
