Timing timing timing!
You can speed up the smashes, if you hold "forward" as you smash.

OK cool I will try it, so If I keep spamming the R2 button it wont work? If so when do I push R2 again? after my guardian has stood up? Thanks for the help

If you spam it as fast as you can, it can lock up at times like you have seen. Learning the timing is best. You can even practice, if you go into the Sword of Crota or Fist of Crota mission, and grab the swords there.
