So bungie, I know we all rant about gambit, we aren’t appreciative of how it turned out, I think it’s a balanced argument, it’s difficult to make gambit fun, there are lots of factors to bear in mind to make it a balanced mode, but I have a few ideas as a gambit prime player that I think could make gambit a better mode.
Ammo economy:
1. Heavy
I think heavy quantity is a big problem in gambit, I respect that heavy is a means to invade or dps, but there is far too much of it, in gambit prime I recall invading with my dearest sacred provenance (oh fond memories) and having fun trying to get kills without a revoker sniping me, I enjoyed the challenge. Alternative having my trusty sentry set allowed me to hit good dps with my tatara gaze sniper from black armory. I haven’t seen many players happy about getting team wiped by 1-2 ghally rockets.
2.special
Due to the lack of heavy ammo, special ammo had a huge place in gambit prime, I personally preferred it that way, players had to work for their kills, whether it be the single brick of heavy they begged for during the envoy phase, or that juicy snipe that the blueberry got with sole survivor (loved it btw, would be overjoyed to see it back in the loot pool). It added a sense of achievement to each win, and that is what I loved, the journey to win made the mode good, not the destination.
Armour sets/synths:
Reaper set:
reaper was an interesting support based set in my opinion, it promoted team play, it dropped special for the team, made motes last longer for collectors, marked and weakened those HVTs for allies to mow down in a rainbow of different calibers of ammunition. As well as this, the grenade regen perk was great for clearing adds when paired with solar or vortex grenades.
Sentry:
Now here is one I loved, it prioritised defence as a good offence, the multi-kill perk for wiping the blockers of the face of the earth (or planet of the drifters choosing) with a shotgun/fusion felt phenomenal. Not to mention that ability to regen health near the bank (similar to solar 3.0 restoration), oh how fun it was to decimate that giant blocker in the blink of an eye. The well was a great mechanic for sentry to buff with the 4th perk, while it was a slight hinderance to deal damage in one area each phase, I think it would be necessary considering the ability to defeat the primeval in one well of light as you could in gambit prime, it lent towards the invasion being easier during damage phase. a well placed grenade could send the (currently) winning team back to their spawn (or to the drifters requests for obscure dealings with spider) in mere moments.
Collector:
This role was daring, a dangerous skill set to be certain, while I’m aware that the tier one perk has been implemented as a feature, I could easily see a replacement perk in mind (for example, “picking up a mote increases mobility for a brief duration , stacks 3x”, for 10 mobility per stack for 3 seconds, each mote adding one second to the timer up to 10 secs max). The mote overshield was a great addition as the extra hp made being a collector feel like they could pick up another mote without the fear of a Minotaur smack putting them in the ground. I personally loved how the ammo regen worked when you deposited motes. Gimme that shotgun mag for an extra few motes to give me the big fella, the giant blocker. He was a monster. A fiend. A hulking mass of health that loved hugs and eating sniper rounds alike. He was beautiful.
Invader:
this was my personal favourite; it was simple, spicy and when I saw one on the other team, scary. A good invader could turn the tides with a well placed snipe on the sentry or collector. The ammo regen was nice but I’m reckoning (see what I did there?) it should be toned down a little. The invasion overshield buff was handy for when a hand cannon user realised that they were gonna need a bigger bullet. The killmonger buff was a touch too wild when used on the primeval but could be toned down against bosses specifically. I cannot stress enough that the 4th perk was tons of fun, it made me feel like I was playing king of the hill with the enemy team on their bank.
Integration suggestions:
Make prime an event mode that ran along things like crucible labs, armour pieces could drop from games of gambit prime in which a piece of illicit or (rarely) outlawed armour drops from losses, and wins award a guaranteed notorious armour piece.
Gambit labs perhaps?
Or even private matches? This way players could earn armour from gambit to take into gambit prime private games against their friends. No rewards, just for fun.
Closing off:
I hope someone reads all this and likes the ideas, I truly do, I adored gambit prime, I will take any feedback I can get from bungie or fellow players. I’m truly upset that it was taken out, but hopefully this post puts back that spark in every dregens eyes when the drifters transmit fired.
