Pg 152
Alekris watches the hunter sleep.
Her three remaining eyes scan over the curled figure beneath the furs of Alekris’s own bed. She looks so small, so helpless.
The eliksni rests a hand on Shadow’s shoulder. Even though she’s asleep, Alekris feels awkward to display her pity.
No, her affection.
The wolf’s heart softens as Shadow’s body shivers within sleep, her feet twitching with nightmares. She hates to imagine the fear and powerlessness she must have felt.
She never would have wished it on anyone. And certainly not Shadow.
Anger stirs deep in Alekris’s gut. She had always hated Praksis. He had always been selfish. But this…
She breathes in his remaining scent, swearing in the depths of her heart that if she ever had a clear shot at Praksis, she would—
Her thoughts are cut short by Variks’s call.
Alekris hesitates, wavering, before she answers.
“Variks.” She does not bother with formal greetings.
“Long day’s grace, Alekris. Is she still with you?”
“She is.”
Pause.
“Is she …available?” he croaks.
She wants to tell him. He’s worried, he knows something is wrong, but not what.
“Let her sleep.” Her hand tightens on Shadow’s trembling form.
No. It is not her place.
It seems to take a moment for Variks to accept her response. “You will keep her safe?”
He has no idea.
Alekris’s heart aches fiercely, warmth gathering behind her eyes. “I will.” Her voice breaks.
