Is Destiny 2 Still Worth Getting Into?

Hi all, First time on the forum. I have a question. It can be summed up as "Is Destiny 2 Still Worth Getting Into?", but more detail is below. So, some backstory. I got the free version of D2 on PS4 the other day, and have been enjoying myself. However, I have been made aware that much of the F2P content was vaulted last year or so, and I have noticed more and more paywalls for missions and such (forcing me to buy the expansions to play various campaigns). I don't have PS PLUS (equivalent to Xbox Gold) as most of my friends play PC and I just end up playing free cross-platform games like SplitGate or Apex. I will eventually get D2 on PC as I am getting a new one in about six months or so (removing the need for a subscription), but none of my friends play D2 anyways. I understand that with the app you can easily join fireteams to do strikes and such, so the first part to my question: is playing with random people fun, or does a lot of the enjoyment come from playing with your buds? Second, obviously, Bungie dropped the ball when it comes to removing loads of content. The DLCs are still quite expensive ($100 CAD), but is there enough content (and fun enough content) to justify the high price? And on the flip side, is there a lot of content still in the F2P campaigns (I think the only F2P left is the cosmodrome and (maybe I think) Nessus?)? Or is it super small, forcing you to get DLC to actually progress/play anything? Third, reading the (albeit a small amount) of the takes from players, people seem pretty down in the dumps about D2 in general at the moment. Ignoring the fact that it was better before, is the game still fun now? Or does it feel like a husk of a game once great? Therefore, my overarching question is this: is this game still enjoyable, and worth the $100 DLC price? Or does it feel lifeless now, compounded by the fact that I won't be playing with friends? (Yes I get everything is subjective; I'm just looking for opinions lol) Thanks

Is it worth getting into? Depends on why you want to play. PVE? Absolutely. PvP? Not so much. For PVE players, don't let those with franchise fatigue around here fool you. The game is in as good as shape as it has ever been. Bungie has really refined what they want the game to be over the last two years, and its starting to hit its stride as an MMO/RPG/looter-shooter hybrid. Bungie is aggressively hiring new people to increase their capacity to create content for the game, so things should only continue to get better. PVP? That's another story. PvP in this game is in an awkward spot....and its union with PVE in this game is a bad marriage. A bad marriage that Bungie refuses to face the reality of squarely. Its in a bad way because the "balanced" game of skill that most FPS gamers want in PvP is not compatible with the power-progression that you need in MMOs and RPGs. So as PVE gets better....PvP gets worse.....and vice-versa. Bungie has largely neglected PvP for the last two years, and what it has announced coming (last weeks Twitter novel by the lead designer) is far off, and underwhelming. If you're a PVP-oriented player, I simply cant recommend to anyone that its worth investing in Destiny. There are simply too many other....better....PVP games out there. Now about your concerns. One. The vaulting of content was necessary for two reasons. This game's design requires a large portion of the game to run on local hardwar (your console). Destiny 2 was designed in a way that pushes the last gen consoles pretty hard performance-wise. But the current version of the game still has to RUN on those older machines. So vaulting content---that the vast majority of the player base had stopped playing...again don't let the malcontents fool you----took a major processing load off those machines, and it made the game run MUCH better and more smoothly. Also, Beyond LIght was part of what was probably intended to be Destiny 3 before the split with Activision 2 years ago. So there was probably a major upgrade to the game engine, which Bungie hinted at requiring a recoding (from scratch) of locations in the game. So they were also (most likely) vaulted so that Bungie could have the time to recode them, without having to delay the release of Beyond Light at a critical time in the game's life. Two. Destiny is not intended to be a FTP. Not in the sense of Warframe, or Apex. It's structured more like the MMOs you see in the PC and Console world. Where OLD content is given away to entice new players to invest in the game, and reduce the barrier to (re)entry by (returning) new players. But susequent content is intended to be bought. The game funcions on a yearly cycle of major expansisons (like Forsaken, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light) as well as seasonal cycle of "drip feed" content designed to keep giving us a steady flow of new things to do, as well as advance the story of the game between major expansions. Is the content worth the price? Only you can answer that question. BUT if you are someone who is likely to play enough to keep up with the community (at least a few hours a week)? It is a value that is VERY difficult to beat. As Destiny's competitors in the industry are finding out the hard way. As none of them have been able to replicate Bungie's PVE success with this game. Three. YOU HAVE TO FILTER OUT FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY. BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT ROLLS, YOU WILL BE MISLED.A A. This forum is the LAST place you want to come for balanced, fair criticism of the game. This place is dominated by people who usually have a long standing axe-to-grind with Bungie and with game devs in general. It is legendary in gaming circles for its toxicity, and is something of a meme in other places where this game is discussed. Which is why Bungie treats this place like you would a caged Tiger, that's likely eat your arm off if you get too close....and its deserved. B. We are at the end of a long season. This community tends to act like someone with poorly controlled bipolar disorder (manic depression). We emotionally cycle as a group with really high highs of emotion at the start of seasons or whenever there is new things to do in the game....and then we crash and get really down on the game when that supply runs out. Rinse and repeat. IOW, much of that negativity your hearing is because we are at the end of a season and---if you don't raid or do GM NFs----there really isn't much to do in the game right now. That will change in two weeks with the start of Season 15. The community will get excited again, and the negativity will comeback when we've finished that season's content. C. Crucible. MOST of the realy negative attitudes right now are coming from the PVP side of the game. Which---honestly----has a legitimate basis. As I said earlier, Bungie hsa neglected this side of the game...and its poorly positioned relative to what Bungie wants to do with the PVE side of the game. so the future of PVP in Destiny does not look very good, and that side of the player base is (understandably) running out of patience with the lack of support and the lack of transparency from Bungie on this. 4. If you think the game is for you. I'd play. Bungie is set to add crossplay to the game next season so you would still be able to play with friends on PC until you get your own. Plus with cross-save being in the game now, you'd be able to take your Guardian with you to PC once you made the platform change. Hope this helps.

      • If you find the world they’ve built and the quality of the art and sound design intoxicating enough to want to spend hours in it, then yes. The guns are also a lot of fun to use and grind for. To me, Destiny is about escapism more than anything. I’ve been playing for years because I think the world they built is a lot cooler than Star Wars and I like to inhabit it.

      • tl;dr: No, it’s not worth getting into if you’re new or a veteran. The problem with Destiny 2 right now is that it’s trying to be a game it neither can be nor can live up to: an MMORPG. When Bungie announced that Destiny 2 is an MMORPG, MMO fans laughed their asses off, because they knew it wasn’t nor could be a proper MMO. People were like, “Does Bungie actually think Destiny 2 is worthy of having the MMORPG designation?” To their credit, they’re right. When you look at a traditional MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, EVE Online, Black Desert Online, etc), there are certain pillars and standards that MMOs live by: -Feeling massive (not in terms of environments, though that does help). When you load in to a level, there’s the possibility that there will be dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of players in the same area as you. It makes the world feel alive. In Destiny 2, the most that can be on a screen is… 18. Wooo. -Fostering community through engaging content. Without content, a community cannot thrive. Without a community, a game cannot thrive. If the content is not compelling, unique or interesting enough, or if new content is not being made, people will not be willing to stick around. The problem with Destiny 2’s content is that the end-game hasn’t changed at all since vanilla Destiny 2 - nearly 4 years ago! Sure it had some minor tweaks over the years (the introduction of Pinnacle rewards, expansion-related content, Grandmaster Nightfalls, etc.), but in terms of what you’re actually doing, it hasn’t changed all that much: do strikes, do the Nightfall, do Crucible/Iron Banner/Trials, and do the raid (I’m not counting Gambit, since nobody plays Gambit. I’m also excluding seasonal content for reasons I’ll elaborate on in a little bit). It doesn’t help that the vast majority of what you do in Destiny 2 is primarily tied to progression - to being more powerful. There’s barely any content that is purely auxiliary. For example, in Final Fantasy XIV, you had your end-game content like raids, sure, but you also have: Crafting, gathering, hunts, treasure maps, the Gold Saucer (basically an in-game casino/arcade), transmog, Beast Tribe quests (basically reputation quests), the Firmament, Doman Restoration, Palace of the Dead/Heaven-On-High, and many, MANY other pieces of content that I probably forgot to include. And what do these have in common? They’re all unrelated to the end-game; they’re all auxiliary progression. What does Destiny 2 have in the form of auxiliary progression? Let’s see, there’s… Transmog! And, uh… Uhhhh… Earning titles? Woooo. Yeah, Destiny 2 doesn’t have anything auxiliary or interesting. -Commitment to expanding the game. This is arguably the most important pillar in any MMO out there: ensuring that players have enough content to keep them engaged with the game. Anything in a game (classes, expansion packs, story, dungeons, raids, primary or optional objectives/goals, balance updates, even community) is considered content. Since an MMO - or anything with the “games-as-a-service” label - can only exist when content is continually and regularly created and updated. When a game stops developing content, it’s the telltale sign that an MMO (or a “games-as-a-service” game) is dead or the developers are moving on to a different project. As it was discussed above, when people run out of content to do, there’s no point in staying any longer, since a player has already done everything they can do. Now Destiny 2 does this just fine, but the problem with Destiny 2 is that it’s at a point where they need to delete content - oh, I’m sorry. I meant to say, “put content in the Destiny Content Vault”! - in order to make developing new content shorter and easier. This sets a bad precedent for future expansions, as anything that’s in the game right now won’t matter or isn’t permanent, since it will simply be removed - oh, right, “put content in the Destiny Content Vault”! How could I possibly forget such a blatantly absurd euphemism for “We’re deleting content because we’re too lazy to develop new content in existing areas for our game because we have a skeleton crew working on the game while the overwhelming majority of the developers here are working on a top-secret project that apparently demands more attention!” How foolish of me! - once something is no longer worth updating or developing with. Especially since all content from these seasons will be removed from the game anyway, making the grind pointless. Every MMO in existence has never (or rarely) removed content from the game. In short, Destiny 2 is a game that tries to be something it can’t. It’s not a game for fans of MMORPGs - or anyone who has casually dabbled in an MMORPG - because it’s so painfully average and lackluster in every way. There’s barely any content in the game that justifies investing your time in it, and a good portion will be removed anyway, and any new content from an expansion or season will barely scratch that itch that an MMORPG fan needs (expansions in Destiny 2 are just glorified content updates that you’d find in any MMO, with these seasons being more like minor content releases). It wouldn’t surprise me if their reasoning for announcing Beyond Light along with the next two expansions - The Witch Queen and Lightfall - is because they know that Destiny 2 is in a downward death spiral that they can’t recover from and that Lightfall will serve as the closing final chapter of this mediocre and underwhelming franchise.

          • People have been down in the dumps about D2 since beta. Forsaken was no TTK and mostly played to our emotions with the story. Otherwise, I wonder how much more bungie can destroy it. Bringing back D2 versions of things that people liked in D1 instead of actually being creative and innovative is so blatantly desperate, and sadly people are willing to throw money at bungie for content and gear they paid for back in D1, which is still a way better game than Bungie could ever make D2 at this point. If you want to play destiny and have fun, just stick to D1.

            • So I can answer with the view of a player who has a main account and a secondary account that is basically a F2P character. Firstly playing with your buds is the fun part of the game. Yeah certain things offer matchmaking but anything really challenging you want some mates along to help. So if you don't have five of them that regularly play, raids are not out but LFG or randoms are good/bad times. Secondly, F2P you'll only get the top row of the seasonal pass rewards. So you miss out on the seasonal gear (which is either good/bad depending if you like the set) and more importantly the materials, of which when your a F2P player materials like cores, legendary shards, ascendant shards, planetary materials are needed and limited in supply unless your farm like crazy. So upgrading anything is a real choice - of which I enjoy that part. (unlike my main account that's swimming in materials). F2P can raid, do dungeons but you miss out on grinding certain seasonal loot, but from where I sit, you honestly can do without. So I enjoy my main account, run three characters, leveling at this point is down to a science. And I also enjoy my single character account - but only cause I've taken it through raids, dungeons, yada yada and acquired weapons and high stat gear to make the character not the weak part of a team. Which in conclusion brings up the real question, is this fun to play? yes is the answer, but it's super repetitive and F2P is rewarding but only if you can do endgame content, raiding, trials, dungeons. So unless you plan to solo everything or find some mates to play with. this might not be the game for you. Cheers Wook

            • If you're a new player, yes! The game is tailored to be welcoming and very forgiving for new players! If you're a returning Destiny veteran, not at all. You're treated as second rate garbage, you're constantly swept aside for new players, and everything you have is taken away from you because you had the gall to give Bungie a job and pay for their overpriced demo before Shadowkeep.

            • Short Answer is NO, nada, save your money! Forsaken DLC was as good as D2 ever got. Unfortunately those days are long gone and so is the content. If you're a new player you will have things to do, but the best bits are gone! Now it's just a bounty mill on the road to nowhere. Like a mouse running on a wheel. Witch Queen better be good or I have to say D2 is dead to me. Love the gun play and mechanics. It's unmatched by any other FPS. Content is dry and gutted. It's a shell of it's former self. IMHO.

If you are asking for just opinions. Then the answer is NO. It's isn't worth 100 dollars. That price us for a premium high quality, huge content kind of a game. And this game right now is not that kind of game. The ultimate end game here is called "Friend" game. Because most end game content are designed to be played with a fireteam. If that is your cup of tea, then that's what you'll get here. The rest are just repetitive gameplay and the regular recycling content of gear and activities. Even the annual events are repetitive and recycled content. The push for greedy microtransactions is also evident in everything that they touch and do. If you are into this kind of milking cow, there's plenty here for that. You will also feel kinda trap running the hamster wheel with no progress on your effort except to shell out and throw money at the screen on a regular basis. Despite of that, you will NOT feel rewarded for your effort. Overtime, you will feel like the game is being neglected. That's because it is. They are working on other projects now and most gamers that have been playing since the beginning knows and feels this because of the amount of changes that has happened to the game as if the game has completely morphed into something unrecognizable. This in part is brought about by the loss of their major investor that left the franchise halfway through their intended plan. In short, the game is like an abandoned sinking ship being run by life support machines. Lastly, there are a lot of lip-service going on in the community. Especially here. Some say the community is toxic. No it's not. It's toxic to some because they are saying truthful things that hurt. And because they don't like what they hear, they accuse them of toxicity. Community isn't toxic. It just so happens that the game has changed and so opinions changed as well. I see a lot of them here tell you not to listen to the toxic community but instead just listen to the good ones. That is complete BS. That right there is lip-service at it's finest. They don't want you to listen to some, but they want you to listen only to them. That's BS. Even that argument is lip-service. All-in-all, the last say is gonna come from you. Don't believe all lip-service talk. When they say don't believe toxic group, just believe them instead, you know there is already something wrong with that statement. You asked for opinions, that's exactly what everyone is giving you, both negative and positive. It's up to you in the end to weigh these things out. You are in-charge of that decision in the end. Enjoy whatever path you choose in your gaming life. After all, it's all about your enjoyment that matters in the end. Peace!

            • Only you can answer this question. Play the game and see if you like it. If you are going to purchase dlcs, make sure you will be satisfied with the content in the dlcs. Lots of people will say no (after all, this is the d2 forum, the best place to rant about why you hate the game and play it every other hour) and lots of people will say yes. Make an informed decision rather than 5 peoples angry rants about how a cutscene was missing a pixel.

If they decide to clean out the shit talking management and get some new talent with creative minds then it might be worth it. Only thing been shown by them now days is how sunset stuff or vault it, not fix issues as in glitched enemies and making everything revolve around you spending money at eververse. To much talk with no results is all bungie is now days!

                • The answer to this question, IMHO, will come down to WHO you play with. Reason I say this is because the game is still a mind numbing grind and is fairly repetitive. However, in my years of playing, I have discovered that it's not WHAT I'm playing, but who I'm playing with - doesn't even have to be in a fireteam. If we're clowning around in game chat, while one goes off and does Gambit, while I'm doing a dungeon, then before I know it, 4 hours has gone by. If you have a good group of friends/clanmates you enjoy talking to, then it is absolutely a good game to get into, or get back into. If not, you can always check out some of the clans on here, get into the free 2 play content with them, and if every thing clicks, get the full game. That's how I got my buddies into it.
