This quest would start after the first raid team clears the raid for that expansion.
So does anyone remember the "Neckrokasm" quest in Destiny 1, where you get a random common drop and it turned out to be a quest? then you would have to do the quest steps in order to get the gun up to higher rarities and get more perks (kinda similar to the Rose/lumina quest for D2 original players to understand). then you would do the final objective to get the exotic.
so going back to the new quest idea, but what if instead of the common version of the exotic being a random drop, it's hidden in one of the new story missions. then every quest step you complete the gun goes up in rarity, but instead of it just being the same gun just in different rarities, it gets closer to looking like it's exotic counterpart after each quest step.
THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH IS ABOUT HOW I CAME UP WITH AN IDEA TO MAKE RAIDS AND RAID CONTENT CONNECT WITH MORE OF THE "NOT-SO-HARDCORE" PLAYERBASE WITHOUT WATERING DOWN THE RAID EXPERIENCE.
So i used to raid a whole lot in destiny, but now i don't as much. One thing that i realized is that bungie puts in a lot of time and effort to make raids good and beautiful, but only a small percentage of players actually do them. So i came up with this idea for the final quest step to get the exotic. so what if the raid has a whole bunch of secret passages ways in it, some that can be opened easily and some that take a little bit of work get to. going back to how this is related to an exotic quest, but what if the final quest step is where you and two others have to go into the raid and find a secret boss. Only one of you needs to have the legendary version of the gun and the gun is the key to open up some of the secret passage ways. Also when you have the gun equipped, it shows you the path that you need to take in order to sneak passed enemies and boss rooms to get to the secret boss. once you beat the boss you get the exotic. If you were a casual player who has never done a raid before, you at least get to experience what destiny raid areas look like and if you're a raider/hardcore player you get to do new things from a raid that you probably already beat.
