Season 10 and Genuine anxiety.

I truly love this game, been playing since D1 VOG. But Season 10 and Guardian games has become a literal detriment to my health. So I'm currently in counseling for PTSD along with my wife and I'm on medication for anxiety and panic attacks, so I hopped back on destiny a few months ago (mid season 8) as a way to de-stress, had taken a break after TTK. Played everything from the red war to shadowkeep and had a blast. Then season 10 came around. And now getting on to destiny does nothing but give me anxiety. The whole "fear of missing out" thing that bungie said they wanted to fix is worse then ever right now and it feels like there are more things in this game that need to be done in a relatively short amount of time than in real life. Between the grind for this season's titles, the ridiculous grind that is Guardian games, the attempt to get the new exotic and the usual hell of trying to finish all the pinnacle activities, bounties, the nightfall and god forbid the raid, the game has become less fun and more like a chore with a time limit. I can't play the game anymore without feeling overwhelmed by everything I need to do. I know this is a personal rant and not many people feel the same way but I just had to get it out there. Yes, I could go play another game or do literally anything els but with the state of the world and everything going on, I'd like to be able to just sit down and relax playing a game I enjoy and not feel like I have a million things to do before it all goes away forever. Edit: I was having a moment a posted a dumb rant but thank you all for not shit posting! Very refreshing in this community! Edit 2: Wow this got alot more attention than I thought it would! Thank you all! And I am doing fine now, sorry for not being able to reply to all of you but thank you so much for the support and good vibes!!!

  • I don't think your rant was dumb at all. If I can offer you a piece of advice, take another break from the game. Make a conscious effort to miss out on all the things you're afraid of missing out on, & you'll see that it ultimately didn't matter whether you got them or not.

    • Normally I dismiss these posts, but I totally agree. I dont have the stress issues, but I can see exactly what you mean. This event alone is ridiculous. Kill 8 million enemies. Turn in 1000 medals... etc Blah man.... waaay too much for normal people, and honestly it's too much for hardcore players because we've all played the ever loving shit out of all of these activities. Pretty disappointing

      • See that, you hit the head of the nail squarely. Season in general have been disappointing. Few bright spots here and there but this season is tough. The seraph towers feel impossible to upgrade with any consistency. The ability to do so has been taken from my hands. It doesn't help matters that seraph towers are boringly bad busy work. Then there's Guardian Games and that exotic. I've played more than I wanted to and holy crap! is the 'show your colors' triumph a long, long, way off. Near Forgetitville. Good luck, have fun.

      • I completely get what you’re saying. I felt the same way. I gave up on this season and now all I’m doing is trying to complete old exotic quests and anything else I haven’t done. The season is irrelevant for me at this point. Hell if I could find my D1 disk I’d play that right now.

      • I've just started playing casually - not going for Titles or even rewards - and I'm having more fun. I play content I want to play with friends and don't worry about the grind, then log off.

      • I had a problem with feeling overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to do, feeling like I had to do everything to chase that high light level. I stoped playing for a few weeks, had a break, then came back, made a Warlock & only play Gambit Prime & Reckoning for the gear. I only pick up the bounties I need & don't put pressure on myself to get everything done. This game is a theme park. Find a ride you like & ignore everything else.

      • Take a break while they fix it my man. If you can’t resist the FOMO drive to worry, stay away. It’s not worth it. There are lots of more casual, at your pace, shooters and action games that might fit you better while Destiny hopefully gets fixed. Good Luck Guardian!

      • One thing (out of many) they need to do is remove the forced reset on the raids each week. Let people focus on one part of the raid each week or even month if they want to.

        • Destiny became more of a Job than a game, so i quit this season. If the game gets better i will return, but two seasons of FOMO BS and i don't want to do it anymore.

          • I think you should stop playing then, if a video game is negatively effecting your mental health and stability it’s probably for the better to just stop playing it. Your mental state is more important than silly Destiny my dude, I wish you luck and good health!

          • My suggestion might match what your therapist would say. If this game is negatively enhancing mental issues and is causing you severe stress and anxiety and worsening your condition. Then you need to remember this is a game for a recreational pass-time, not a mandatory obligation. even if you head tells you that.

          • I actually completely agree with the OP. It was stressful as fuk gearing up for Trials because of Bungies light level nonsense

As others have said below ( and I mean this with the utmost respect) Destiny is a bad fit for you. It's a known fact that Bungie hired behavioural experts to help them create loops and ritualistic game design that breeds and encourages anxiety and compulsive play. Best thing you can do is take a break if you are feeling that way about it. I play excessively but Titles, Triumphs and most of all Eververse items mean nothing to me. If you can see past the fomo and just enjoy the game you are golden. If you can't it's best to step away and find something you can enjoy. It's a game, not a ticksheet of duties, not a job and you are missing nothing by choosing not to play. I sincerely wish you all the best with your health. Bungie on the other hand only want your time and your money nothing more.

              • I spent a good part of 2 years in the Warrior Tranisition Unit going through theropy for PTSD. Its been a while now but I still have moment like most people who spent years in War. My biggest problem is getting stressed about not finding groups to complete content with. I'm a new player and I have leveled up and done alot of different stuff but im to the point where i need 6 people to be there to support raiding and PVP and its hard to find people who will commit to it.

                • If you haven’t already, try WarFrame - it’s FREE! Get past the steep learning curve, set to Solo mode, and go exploring and doing the Planets (missions) at your own pace. And if/when you feel like mixing it up a bit, set to Team mode...and have at it. There’s loads more stuff to learn about, and do...just take it at your own pace, and have fun! Chin up! 👍

                    • You are absolutely right about there being more things in the game that have to be done in a relatively short amount of time than in real life. Back in D1 we waited months for new content. Bungie has gone too far in the opposite direction, requiring activities to be completed in a short period.

                    • I don’t want to sound rude or anything. Yes bungies model is awful and needs amending. However. There are far worse games out there like World of Warcraft that make you left out constantly if you’re not playing. Even Call of duty is doing it. I don’t think Bungie should stop putting out constant updates because of mental health issue you’re having yourself. It would hurt the game. My personal experience I took a break of destiny over the season of the season of the dawn, annoyed I missed out on the cool looking gear. But hey, that’s life and was my choice to stop playing. Besides I think Bungie said they will release all the seasonal stuff for people that missed it later on.

                    • Can relate. Personally, I’m so overwhelmed by the amount of repetitive and stale content that I can’t do it. I’ve done so many strikes, Gambit matches, forge ignitions, crucible matches in this game, by this point, requiring more is just insulting. I know I’m a bit off your point, but it’s the same coin from a different angle.

                    • Hey dude. I got epilepsy, severe anxiety and depression. I know how it feels. It's primarily why I cannot play destiny anymore. It's too much for me.. not fun, and doesn't help me destress

                      • As an ex serviceman who struggled with ptsd, anxiety & a lack of focus for quite a few years, I feel you. I'm now training to be a therapist & debating on going all in for a PHD in psychology, little tricks I've learned & tried, strangely enough actually do apply with this game. Find a starting point, pick up what you need, bounties, specific weapons etc, then go do whatever you're aiming for. I liken it to a list I've written down on a post it or something, it does feel like a second job sometimes but I try to make it fun nonetheless. Good luck to you brother/sister, try not to stress & remember there's always the 'off button'.
