Vex Offensive: Final Assault

First things first - I personally have really enjoyed this season up to this point. Yes there are aspects here and there that need fixing, but overall the Shadowkeep and Undying content as a whole has been fun to play. However, to be honest, I have found the final assault to be disappointing. After being the last big section on the Season 8 roadmap and including a great enemy from D1, I know I am not alone when I say I expected some great things. This excitement only grew when the portal in the tower behind Ikora began to grow week by week. This was a great addition to the game - it brought change to an area guardians visit a lot and I hope a similar but not identical method is used again in the seasons and years to come. But when I logged on this evening to see what this activity would bring, there was only a basic notification as you arrived in orbit. Personally, I was hoping for a surprise cutscene showing the portal in the tower opening up and Ikora and Zavala stepping through for the first time. This would have got guardians heading straight for the tower, eager to start the fight. Then, when reaching the tower for the first time and turning the corner into the Bazaar, the portal still looks unfinished. I have heard rumours that this is an error and I really hope these rumours are true. It would have been great to see the portal powered up and maybe even having NPC guardians coming in and out. Then we come to the activity itself. First of all (I know this is a small superficial note) it would have been nice to see a change in the symbol for the vex offensive to players can see that it has taken a step up from the vex offensive we've been doing in the past few weeks. On top of that, it would make sense to be able to launch it from the tower (like haunted forest) as this is where Ikora's portal is. Inside the activity is where things became a bit frustrating. Yes, there was some new audio from our ghost which was nice, but it did not make up for the fact that it is the same activity. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the vex offensive. But coming to the final assault, I was hoping for some changes. They didn't have to be massive - I was not expecting a new strike to appear with a unique drop (although this would have been amazing) - but it would have been nice for the location to be changed and the mechanics to have been similar to the original ones but scaled up and made more challenging (similar to the way mechanics are introduced and then built on in raids). Having the exact same activity was disappointing. Finally, rewards. We were given a new emblem which is nice but again not really enough to live up to the expectations. It would have been nice to have a unique weapon drop, or weapon ornaments for the existing weapons or maybe the beginning of a quest that somehow leads into season 9. Having nothing substantial other than being able to finish the triumph for 3 clears was not great. Also, I have to say I was surprised that a community challenge was not incorporated into this activity. All things seemed to point towards one starting (the mars one last summer being a test run) but as of yet there has been nothing. To conclude, I think that vex offensive: final assault is a missed opportunity. I would be lying if I said I wasnt dissapointed that folks at Bungie did not take full advantage of what they could have done with this. I will not be quitting Destiny as other guardians have claimed as I know Bungie is capable of coming back from this and making up for this with its usual brilliant quality of content in the future. TL;DR How Final Assault could have been made brilliant: • Cool cutscene to get players in the mood as soon as they load in (this also applies to many other times in the game, if in doubt, add a cinematic cutscene. They are a great way to engage everyone and it would be amazing just to add them absolutely everyhwere) • Culminate the evolving tower in a more rewarding way • Use the vex offensive as a basis and build on it to make it dungeon-like with more challenging mechanics rather than re-using the whole activity • Include a unique weapon drop or ornaments for the 4 weapons we have so far
