This opinion may be mostly unpopular, but...

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is overrated. Usually I’m all for those kind of open world games, but the game’s world feels [i]too[/i] open to me. Everything feels so far away from each other, separated by mostly emptiness. There isn’t very much to so besides just wander around, moving generally in the direction of the main objective, doing little things like solving shrines and killing enemies. It doesn’t really feel like there’s that much content; just mindless filler to occupy the otherwise empty world. And about those main objectives, they seem hella vague to me. Like, I just finished freeing Divine Beast Vah Ruta and I’m like “Ok what now?”. It just says “Free the Divine Beasts”. How? Which do I go for? What do I do? Where do I need to go? How do I get there? How should I prepare? 4 waypoints in 4 completely unmarked spots on the map barely does anything to answer those questions. I ended up going towards the one in the volcano area and getting stuck on a Sheika tower because going down towards the waypoint on the map drains my health due to intense heat. I have nothing to counteract it nor do I know how to get anything that does. I would like the game to be a tad bit more linear with more sub objectives and whatnot. It’s just too broad and vague and it makes it unenjoyable because I’m forced to look up what the hell I’m supposed to to and how to do it. It’s annoying. So yeah. Despite all the praise its gotten I personally don’t see what’s so good about it. There’s no structure to it at all and I would very much appreciate it if there was.

  • Monster Hunter World is overrated. Extremely predictable and repetitive. None of the monsters are challenging and the game as a whole is flat and small.

    • I respect your opinion. Breath of the Wild was a revolutionary change to the formula and does everything right. To me, it's a flawless game, and in the top 5 which to me, are: Metroid Prime, Red Dead Redemption, Mario 64, Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild. Before Breath of the Wild, Majoras Mask would've gotten its place.

    • It's a really good game in my opinion. But I would definitely put a few titles ahead of it, like The Witcher for example.

        • Honestly, agreed. I had no idea what I was doing when I played, neither did I actually leave the 'starting area' or whatever it was. It seemed way too vague for me.

        • I don't see how people can criticise BOTW and then call Skyrim a good game. BOTW is a solid 8/10, like most Zelda games. It's one of the only good open world games that isn't a sandbox, and meets its goals and desires masterfully. Yes, the bosses are really poor, yes the ending was really poor, and yes people who call it perfect and/or the best game ever are wrong, and yes this arguably makes it overrated, but it's still a great game. And all this is without mentioning the game's unique approach to game design and storytelling, and the way it experimented, certainly more than other open world action adventure games do. But what I don't get, is how people can criticise BOTW's dungeons, combat, voice acting, open world, and quests, and then call Skyrim a masterpiece. Like, who are you kidding? Let's do a quick comparison: Skyrim's combat is literally button mashing to see a boring slashing animation, whereas BOTW has an in depth, complex dodge-hit combat system, that incorporates interesting world interaction and throwing breakable weapons, and using a bow and melee weapon at the same time. Skyrim literally has one voice actor over and over, whereas all of BOTW's main characters have an actual identity. Skyrim's dungeons are all medieval sewers, BOTW's are all steampunk-ish underground testing chambers. Skyrim has a mostly empty open world with a few mobile NPCs, enemies and collectables, ditto for BOTW. The quests for both involve one main quest where you're the chosen one, and a bunch of fetch quests. What I'm getting at is, they both have some of the same flaws, but at least BOTW has some actual strengths to go along with them.

          • I agree with your perspective. I prefer a more objective based Zelda game with more complicated dungeon themes instead of like 100 small shrines etc. However the very aspects that you dislike about BOTW are the drawing points. It is intentionally made to be a different style. However, when I cast my preferences aside, I end up enjoying BOTW for what it is.

          • I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. For different reasons then yours, however. I'm used to the focus on magical music, to dungeons with actual themes, boss fights that stand out from all before them. I played and enjoyed BotW, but to me it was just a good game, not a good Zelda game

            • It was a good game. It changed what people expected of Zelda games and went in a totally new direction. It also pushed what games should be doing with open worlds. The problem I had with it was that I never felt like anything I did was meaningful or had any impact. I never really felt like I was progressing or doing something worthwhile. The shrines were weak and tedious, and it got to the point where I just didn't want to do them. I'd say it deserved GOTY. I'd have rather it gone to Nier: Automata, though.

                  • I haven’t actually left the starting area. Mainly because I can’t find the final dungeon thing I needed to clear, so I won’t say anything other than, pretty game looks pretty.

                  • All the zelda games have vague objectives, they're puzzle solving games. Breath of the Wild is honestly just kind of like one gigantic legend of Zelda temple. They don't hold your hand and want the players to figure it out and grow on their own. I personally prefer figuring out what to do by myself. I'd feel like the game was treating me like I'm stupid if it just kept on telling me exactly what to do next and how to do it. I like to learn on my own and figure things out by myself. I do understand your opinion though and it seems like the legend of zelda series may just not be your cup of tea. Which is a shame because it's one of my favorite series lol.

                      Why do people always use the term “overrated” to describe popular things they don’t personally enjoy. Just because you personally didn’t enjoy BOTW doesn’t mean the opinions of everyone who did are wrong. The game was hugely popular and highly praised - both by critics and fans. Therefore it isn’t “overrated”. It’s rating accurately reflects the quality and popularity of the game. It’s completely fine that you didn’t enjoy the game. Obviously people have different tastes and opinions. But it isn’t “overrated” just because you didn’t like it.

                        • While I can see your point, personally the game would be much worse if the whole world wasn’t as sparsely populated as it is. The main focus of the game is how it’s world was left in shambles after a disaster that occurred a century ago. You wouldn’t really get that sense of catastrophe or loss if the world was just filled to the brim with people to see & things to do. The game’s disaster would just feel like a pushover & lack any weight or importance. That’s just my perspective on it.

                          • I’m not a fan of a lot of small dungeons and a few kinda big ones(the guardians). I liked the bigger dungeons in Twilight Princess. Also, you unlock everything too early. After you get all the iPad features(I don’t know how to spell what it’s actually called) there is little to no feeling of progression. Getting more hearts and stamina is useful for sure, but the enemies can do so much damage to where at times it doesn’t really matter.
