Good Wednesday morning my fellow post-floodians. Today marks the beginning of a new post series headlined by, yours truly, HoTh. Today we will be taking a look at the heartwarming and simultaneously gut-wrenching drama, A Silent Voice (2016). Every now and then, I watch a movie that completely charms and captivates me, a film where every aspect works together to form a beautiful medley. Rarely, if ever, does it take the form of an animated feature. A Silent Voice was one of those films. The film, opening image to credits roll is an impressionistic masterpiece. A Silent Voice is based off the graphic novel series of the same name. The plot of the movie focuses on the strange relationship between Ishida Shoya and Nishimiya Shoko. In elementary school, Shoya (male) relentlessly bullied the deaf Shoko (female) to the point she switched schools. In turn, Shoya is mercilessly bullied all the way through late high school. Near the end of 11th grade, Shoya attempts to commit suicide because of the guilt of his past sins. The rest of the movie deals with Shoya trying to gain forgiveness for his past sins. Plot aside, the animation alone is worth viewing this film for. All throughout the movie there are many beautiful settings. It seems obvious to me that the animators at Kyoto animation are very proud of their work. Long scenic shots persist throughout the film. Every scene is an impressionistic masterpiece. Every sharp detail and every muted line work in unison to craft a satisfying picture of their world. The Character design is also excellent. Shoko doesn't utter a word for a majority of the film, but her design was utterly captivating. The design of all the supporting cast identifies the characters without shoehorning them. The music itself should not be overlooked either. I have been blasting it since I watch the movie. The impressionistic and simple nature of the production is beautiful itself. The simple piano pieces, the pulsing electronics and the occasional use of strings work together very well It was fundamentally a moving film, the art, music, and story came together in a way that leaves me speechless every time I watch it.
