Heroism amidst tragedy: Flight 93

Flight 93, as probably many of you know, was the fourth plane in the 9/11 attacks that was taken over by Al Qaeda terrorists. Their intended target was reportedly the U.S. Capitol building. But thankfully it never it reached its target. Before the terrorists could complete their mission, the brave men and women of flight 93 resisted them and the plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, fragmenting the plane and the people inside of it. Those people, passengers from three different countries included, gave their lives to prevent the continuation of the horrible attacks that has already happened that day.
For me, that's why I can't joke about this. The beauty of this nation, and most Democratic nations in the world, is that we have the freedom to speak our mind freely. You are more than free to joke about this stuff. I'm not offended or angry when I see these jokes, I've seen it before and it would be silly to keep getting offended every year. But to me, the sacrifice of the people of flight 93, whose bodies were fragmented upon crashing, will never be a joking matter. The mass murder of humans should never be taken lightly, in my mind. If you do joke about it, I hope you still respect and remember that 2,977 people died this day, eighteen years ago, and I'm sure most of you do.
Thank you for a very solid post Ring. This is information that doesn’t get brought up enough. I’m sure not everyone on that flight wanted to fight off the hijackers however it was the best solution at the time.

    • I’d like to apologize if I offended someone for the comment I put on the joke post.
I had only said that it was an inside job
This is due to my limited knowledge of the events leading up to the twin towers falling. I have the utmost respect for those who risked their lives to help others during that tragedy. I try not to be a conspiracy theorist but there were just some things about how they fell that have never added up to me. I’ve been to within a few blocks of the memorial site and tried to imagine the immense pain and destruction that happened. It’s overwhelming to know so many lives were lost that day but good to know so many were saved from death that day as well. We live in a country that tries to pretend it didn’t happen and blames the attack on the planes and not the people who hijacked them and that is what I’ve lost some respect for. I’m still proud to be an American and will continue to be but again I’m apologize for any hurt I may have caused.

Anyone with a ounce of sense, can tell it was an inside job. RIP the folk involved.

      • For me, 9/11 is no joking matter. I used to joke about it, but that was when I was 10 and didn't ever think about the loss of human life. As another person said on this post, some people joke about it as their way of coping with it. I understand that. I cope with it by thinking about how we've rebuilt. That thought of how we've rebuilt gives me hope for the future, whether we're still on Earth or on Mars.

It hurts especially for me. My family has lived in NY state their whole lives, and I had an uncle who helped during the aftermath of the Tower's collapse. Some of the stories he told me were heartwrenching. And every single firefighter station I know has a piece of the towers as a remembrance for that day. This is why I'll never stoop to 9/11 dark humor, as I've had some family who've seen this go down, in my state no less. And why TSA is such a pain nowadays. They don't want this to happen again. And I don't blame them

If I died in a terrorist attack I’d absolutely want you all to mock the shit out of the perps.

          • My dad was about to leave on a business trip to that place when it happened, and he told me his cousin was late for work that day and was currently on a subway heading to a building that was under the towers....

            • I personally don’t joke about it. But I think(hope) that most of the jokes were just their way of coping.

            • I agree with you on all of this but I do make jokes about it with me and my friends but we all know that it's so that we don't have to think about the tragedy itself.

I like a little dark humor every now and then, it’s the fact that today is dedicated to those who died and people decide to make jokes now, of all days. And I can see you in the replies, chill out. It’s an opinion, we all have them.
The Veggie has spooketh
I’ll never forget that day. It was the start of my sophomore year in HS and I was in between first and second period when I noticed people acting oddly. By the time I got to Mr. Warnock’s World History class I saw the TV on and Mr. Warnock instructed us to sit and be quiet and watch as history was unfolding currently on the east coast. I’ll also not forget the next few weeks. The unity of all Americans, no matter their skin color or political affiliation, was palpable. I do miss those days. A shame that it took 9/11 to give us 9/12.

              • I’ll be honest, I’m not sure that the people here have respect for those who died that day.

                • If I'm being honest, I don't think I could be brave as those people who died, I guess they didn't have a choice which sucks. #NeverForget
