Just an existential conversation about Destiny and gaming

TLDR; I loved D1 and am enjoying D2 immensely. I’m concerned with the amount of time I’m investing in gear/weapons that will be irrelevant when D3 releases. The notoriety and debate surrounding The Bad JuJu quest has brought back into focus a long running concern of mine.. and I’d welcome any constructive dialogue and opinions. This could very well spiral into vacuous nihilism and I will do my best to prevent that. I’m not great and Destiny. I try, I grind , I Gambit and Iron Banner and do end game stuff when I can... I love this game... I really do. It has captured my attention and time like no game before it...Which is causing a dissonance inside me that I can no longer ignore. I feel like I’m working very hard at this whole grinding of gear and weapons thing... so... many... sedentary hours... lots of fun, a sizable dose of frustration and some occasional happy surprises. I just don’t think I can justify it anymore... the time I invested to obtain a digital gadget with a very short lifespan... Many people here have three characters, myself included though only my Titan gets any love... Here’s the crux; let’s say I put in 500 hours into Destiny 2.. amass all this D2 goodness and then D3 comes and so the journey begins anew..Some people love that but I’m really, truly struggling with it... I guess I look at my actual life with my Wife and my daughter and our business and I think,,, shouldn’t I be investing these hours into my primary character (me, 20 pounds over weight, at times very selfish, unvarnished addictive personality me) and then I start to wonder how 500 hours would manifest itself in my life, in my health , in my marriage and the business.. on and on the the slope goes down , past the rabbit hole and well on its way to gaming might be bad (for me).. If any of you have ever been down this and come out the other side still grinding away I’d sure appreciate your perspective and learning of your journey. Thank you

  • Brave post. Well said. GG Suggestions: 1. Reverse your time-table - put the hours you currently spend in the game into the family and business, and watch the real rewards of life multiply beyond your wildest dreams. 2. Try Quake 4 - it's a hoot; and you'll see a lot of familiar stuff seen in Destiny and other games. 3. WarFrame - ditto. 4. See no. 1 - and rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Be brave! Get it Done! Good luck! Cheers!
