Careful what you wish for...

So, the video from Bungie showed how they are overhauling all of our armor so we can pretty much plug and play with whatever mods we want. While I think it is cool to have that level of customization for our armor...I can't help but think of a couple outcomes here: 1) Isn't this going back to what we had with D2 Vanilla? I mean everyone will strive to get the same build because guides will say "this build is da beast build boooi". Who is going to run a high strength, mobility build? 2) This is my biggest fear...Bungie sees this as another opportunity to maximize the grind for something; therefore, substituting any content with senseless grind. "Complete 200 strikes for one Resilience Mod".

  • 1. That isn’t a vanilla problem. Just like random rolls and certain perks on a super, there will always be the preferred perks. Not everyone will look for a tier 12 set 2. Of course they’d do that. They did it with cores, mods, and will do so again

  • I just like that I can continue to use the armor set/combos I like. I just started playing the Spider-Man PS4 game and you can pick what suit you want and what power you want. It’s so refreshing to be able to have your favorite suit with your favorite power and I thought, I can’t wait for Destiny to make this same move.

  • If its basically the current set of perks we have now, but we can tailor them to our liking via mods, I'm ok with that.

    • I think that it will open up players' ability to run whatever armor they want while allowing them to pick the specific specs to imbue on each piece. That way, players can have the exact look they want and the exact armor perks/specs they want. It would eliminate the grind of repeating certain activities looking for that one roll on a certain piece of armor. As with any customizable option, I'm sure there are going to be popular configurations that many players will gravitate to, the same as with how players seek out certain rolls for both armor and weapons that are popular. Moving to the previewed armor system will make that easier for players to do rather than them having to repeat certain activities to try to achieve the same goal. But not everyone will be striving for the same build, and the ones that will try for the "popular" builds won't do so any more or less than they are now. Like I said, it will just make it easier for them, the same as it will be for literally everyone to get the armor rolls that they want, whether the builds are popular setups or not. Without knowing exactly what the process will be that involves using "the artifact" (mentioned in the vidoc as the object by which such armor configurations will be implemented), it's hard to know for sure the result on grinding. If there is a item needed to make changes to piece of armor, then it would likely require an artifact to be obtained for each piece of armor that is to be customized. That would likely entail farming or grinding for either the artifacts themselves or the materials needs to create/fabricate/purchase the artifacts. Or if the artifacts require some sort of "fuel" material needed to make specific changes (like infusion costs are currently), then there would still be a grind and/or farming involved. So yes, the possibility for potential grinding is still there, and I would venture to guess, very likely. I would also be willing to bet that grinding will never go away in this game. And I do think that it's important to have it, to a point. A good balance and a good economy is needed for grinding to really work in keeping players engaged, but avoiding boring some players and not completely discouraging others. But a good balance is hard to achieve, especially when the playerbase is pretty much all over the map as far as a relative concept of "difficulty". (But the futility of any company trying to please every last one of the people that buy their game is the topic for a different discussion. It gets into target audience and a lot of other things that would cause a tangent discussion that would derail and hijack your specific discussion). But again, without any details on what the exact process and/or requirements are for customization, it's all speculation at best right now.
