...the tale of the guardian who went out to meet him
Voices. Darkness. Swarming smoke, choking, smothering. Dragging in air desperately, heart racing. Her gun feels unbearably heavy. Light, drained. Weight, unbearable weight.
Why did I do this? Why did I come here alone?
To prove yourself, the voice answers back.
Blood bubbles up from her lungs, making her cough.
Pressure, too much pressure. Her lungs feel as if they will collapse any moment.
Oryx’s stare holds her in place. She can’t move. Freezing cold claws of terror rake down her spine. Hope is nothing here. What have I done.
She sees the flicker of light from her ghost. No, save yourself!
Grief sharp as thorns dig deep into the guardian’s heart. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
She hopes he can hear her. Their eyes meet for one split second. He blinks at her, he’s trying to speak, but she can’t hear. A stray bullet breaks their contact, sending him flying.
“NO!!!” Shadow screams out in agony, falling to one knee. She can feel herself dying.
She can hear him speaking but can’t make out the words. She catches a glimpse of a broken shell piece. No...
Time catches up with her like water rushing overhead. A massive clawed hand is wrapped around her throat.
Shadow chokes and kicks out furiously, brought out of her haze. Her frantic gaze darts between all three blazing green eyes. She can feel her soul practically being sucked away from her body.
It’s loud- so loud. Her ears throb with the screaming of the taken. I’m so sorry. I just wanted to save my city.
Her heart aches fiercely. She wants to cry out for Variks. Her eyes fill with tears. Variks always knew what to do. Yet her comms were so far gone it wouldn’t be possible. Even Variks couldn’t get her out of this one.
Shadow feels the last of her oxygen leaving her, blackness crowding in around her vision.
“Y o u r l i g h t i s m i n e.”
This is the last thing I will see. The Taken King.
She’s not sure, but she thinks she hears some explosion... a flash of light, maybe.
Shadow’s amber eyes dim and roll back, her body falling limp. Had he let her go?
No matter, it was too late. Darkness floods the last of her vision.
I failed. I failed. I failed.
