I Love Swords, But They Suck

I've always used a sword. But they have no place in the game. They suck at killing ads, they're bad in pvp, and they're mediocre at best at dealing DPS to bosses, so long as the boss is staggerable. Somethings gotta change with swords to make it so they have a place in the game somewhere, because I want to use them, but the only time I can use them is for fun, if I'm doing a strike or whatever where it doesn't matter too much, I go ahead and use a sword. If I'm in quickplay, I'll use it for fun as well. But if I'm in a raid, doing reckoning, or playing competitive, you better believe I'm having to use something else because a sword (aside from black talon in PvP) is a terrible weapon choice for oppose to other heavy weapons. Not sure what you could do for Swords, more movement speed??? Slashes actually hit all enemies in front of you? Moving them to a different slot? Cooldown based energy meter instead of ammo??? I don't really know what the answer is, but I truly believe that as much as I love swords and will likely to continue to use my masterworked Abide the Return, I know that it's one of the worst heavy weapon categories and doesn't bring much to the table aside from possibly consitent stagger to Majors, and SOME bosses (atleast the ones who can't one shot you with melee like Reckoning knights), and being able to possibly loop a stomp on certain bosses and majors to prevent them from using other attacks.

  • Stun them with grenades or jump and attack. I do that a lot in gambit.

    • Dark drinker, arc sword and raze lighter should come back as heavy. The rest should come to the special slot. If shotguns can do that much Dps - swords should as well. Trench barrel is actually still amazing

          • Poor Titans got the shit end of the stick with new exotics this season. "Lets make them an exotic that has to do with a weapon NOBODY USES, AND lets make it NOT work with the only sword that IS useful." Like wtf.

            • Swords are..actually pretty good. Have you seen a god roll surrounded spec Stryker's sure hand? It does some insane damage. The problem is that shotguns also do that simillar damage, and arent a heavy weapon. Swords simply need a few more perk choices which benefit the aggro play style. Maybe some exotic armor which also benefits swords only (like the titan one but for damage rather than blocking. I love the new sword added in this season and its new perk is ... interesting and pretty strong just not that useful and hardly comes up. I feel like more perks which simply promote the playstyle of being next your enemy would be enough to help them out.

              • It’s not like bungie forgot about them either, considering they keep adding them. But it’s almost like bungie thinks they aren’t bad. When we have heavy weapons like sleeper, whisper, 1k voices, anarchy, and lmg’s, why would we want a sword that does less damage than every single one of those options?

                • Stamp mechanics make it hard to do boss Dps but daaaaaam they slice through yellow bars. I have tireless blade and whirlwind strikes on all elements with back up mag. 50 rounds means you can slice a lot of shite up. I mean a lot <<

                • My strykers sure hand does really well. Impact masterwork. Jagged edge for increased damage. Assassins blade for Increased damage, whirlwind blade for Increased damage and a boss spec. But that’s just one sword, with a good roll.

                • I feel like they might do better as special weapons... they don’t compare to the current heavies, they’re a risk/reward where the reward isn’t that great Also; I killed myself with wardcliff 3 times in the same nightfall... my team hated me but hey, it was arc/Heavy lol how could I not use it

                    • We need armor! Seriously swords needs armor, you will die to a shotgun before you even do a full slash animation. Movement speed needs to go up, whats the difference from a guy running with a shotgun than a guy with a sword? Increased lunges and hit registration. I should not have to slash a guy 3 times before the sword finally decides to deal damage, this is a problem on both pve and pvp. Blocking with sword should not drain a lot of ammo, one bullet from a hand cannon takes away almost half of your ammo. Blocking with sword should not slow you down either, we have jumps that go insanely high but we slow down when guarding with a sword? Swords should go to special slot, there is absolutely no reason anymore for swords to stay in the heavy slot. Shotguns on the special slot right now actually deals more damage than swords that are on the heavy slot. Unless bungie seriously buffs the heck out of damage on swords there is no real reason to keep them on the heavy slot. Faster sword animations, apart from quickfang, swords animations are terribly slow. As I said previously, a shotgun will kill you before you even have a chance to attack. These are all the things a sword truly needs to be viable, all these changes wont even make them OP because shotguns still shoot faster than a sword ever could at dealing damage, shotguns still go much farther than swords, shotguns can be aimed and spreads are more forgiving than a sword ever could since swords are inconsistent anyways. Missing a swing pretty much spells death for you when using swords.

                        • I wish they were better too. They’re basically shotguns without the range so a shotgun will always be better. I will say however that I saw a someone on “sentry duty” in Gambit last night and he/she was absolutely wrecking the blockers with a sword. After a few times I stopped even going to help because it wasn’t necessary. One of the few instances where I saw great sword use and it made me smile. Too bad I don’t really like Gambit all that much and will likely never see this again.

                        • They need to go back to d1 resistance when blocking and increase the amount you can carry by alot. Regular swords need to have a charge of at least 30. Even with the new titan exotic that pretty much half ass what i suggested it does not accommodate for damage you take and there is still the issue of only having 7 ammo period. I get it swords like bolt caster and black talon are a nightmare but with how stupid heavy is only 1 person will have it and will change up this dumb wardcliff meta. Either increase the ammo cap or make it a special with 7 ammo that can be stacked.

                        • Bungie are just plain incompetent at this point, you may be better off directing your feedback towards someone like Unkown player or Datto or the likes. Maybe just slip in a D2 feedback request amongst the video replies for example ;)
