I think it's a real shame that this game doesn't support cross-platform play. It seems to be the perfect candidate and have all the ingredients to make it a success: it has a healthy playerbase, is mature (having been out for over a year), is an MMO with emphasis on co-op and, most importantly, runs primarily on Battle.net rather than relying on external services like Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network or Steam (am I wrong about the console versions?). Given the whole clan thing, progress and ID is basically handled on bungie.net or Battle.net or whatever, and the social MMO nature of the game, wouldn't it make sense for Bungie to add cross-play? I mean, ActiBlizz certainly have the budget and it could extend the shelf life of the game as well as attracting many more new players, especially given the game has been given out for free on PC and as part of PlayStation Plus. Of course Crucible should have an option to disable cross-play but still, it would be awesome to play with friends on different platforms, even if it's just in the open-world / casual parts of the game.
