A PVE player guide to enjoying PVP

This is my personal guide to having fun in PVP, but not entirely a guide to being good at it I thought I'd make something like this to help others like me out, when it comes to doing PVP for items we want. e.g. Ace of Spades, and that shotgun that I can't remember the name of but know it is really good, but I am trying to help expand the D2 PVP community, so if anyone here also has useful tips, please do NOTE: This won't help everyone. You don't have to read it if you don't want to, but there isn't going to be a tldr at the bottom, also I am not trying to make this super grammatically correct, if you can read it, and understand it, then you are all good, no need to be my own English teacher. 1. Stay Positive: A very basic first tip, being bad isn't really bad, if you accept it, not everyone starts out a super epic master, as Jake the Dog said "Sucking at something is the first step to becoming sorta good at something" I love AT, anyway, I am not that great at this game, or really a lot of games, but I gotta stay positive and keep playing, and someday I'll actually be better! And so can you. 2. Accept the fact the Crucible (amongst other pvp modes) is a huge part of Destiny: We love Shaxx, we love Saladin, they are apart of the Vanguard (I guess, I never really played D1 and have almost no idea what the lore is, educate me on that) but truth is that, D2 most likely wouldn't survive without any sort of PVP, same goes for almost every single game with a campaign and PVP, so if it has PVP you better believe that they'll will want you playin it. 3. Don't take things seriously/personally: Everyone is trying to do the same thing as you, complete objectives, get bounties, and also win the match, don't expect a walk in the park, it's supposed to be a challenge, you'll overcome it, trust me. 4. Don't leave the game (Unless you really need to): Leaving mid-match isn't cool, your team needs you as much as you need them, sometimes you gotta suck up your pride and stay, even if your team is getting pummeled by a stacked team, but if you are about to rage.... 5. Chill out: I had anger management issues myself, I have broken things in the past, and even hurt myself to cope with my own anger of trying not to break something, but luckily I am better now, but if you are like that, and you are about to flip out and break something, just turn it off and breathe, no one is making you do this, just relax, go punch a pillow, go scream at the top of your lunges somewhere where no one will call the cops, maybe even look into anger management classes or something, don't hurt yourself over a game, you'll be okay, I believe in you. 6. Got Friends?: Most of he time when I play crucible or gambit, it's usually with my best friend, he helped encourage me get the AOS, and I also make sure to always have his back, and vise versa, don't have any friends to play with? Fellow guardian, you are on a forum site with a bunch of other guardians, just call out, do raids, strikes, and such, did an old man never tell you that it was dangerous to go alone? 7. Don't stress over objectives: Just like when doing objectives for PVE, it comes naturally, and of course, and might take longer based on skill, but listen, last night when I was trying to get the 25 precision kills, I was getting really annoyed because I kept dying and not getting the thing I wanted, but then my friend pointed out that I was actually doing pretty well, trust me, don't pressure yourself to complete any bounty or objective in one match, and you'll probably have a lot more fun playing the game. 8. Everyone has a bad game: Having a match going bad? Or even an entire days worth of matches going bad? It's okay Guardian, happens to the best of us, you win some you lose some. 9. Don't blame others: Team mate stole your kill? Don't get mad at them, for all you know, if he hadn't come along, you might've died, and would've handed the match over to the enemy. 10. Blame aim assist....sometimes: Obviously a console exclusive tip, PC kings, you may carry on without reading unless you want to see what the life of us peasants are, yes I play on console, and what would we console players do without our aim assist? Turn it off and find out, if you even can in Destiny, but the truth is, is that AA works differently in Destiny 2 compared to others shooters I have played on console, except maybe Halo... must be a pattern here Explanation: You and an enemy Guardian are having an auto rifle duel, you are both on the verge of death, but you shot first, and have a slightly better AR, the enemy G is 3 bullets away from death, when out of the blue his teammate runs in front of him and your cross hair shifts over to follow the other guy like a dog looking at a squirrel, and now you are dead because your aim messed up, honestly idk if that is just me, if anyone else has experienced this, let me know, if not, then, maybe I am just crazy. I stretched this pretty far, I really want to help other players, and help the pvp community grow, sorry if this was difficult to read, or if it was too long, I just want to help unite the guardians, while also help more of them kill each other. Edit: Most of the people here agreeing are pvp players, some pve players really don't like this, come on guys, you can do both, don't be like Uldren. "The line between PVP and PVE is so very thin. Do you know which side you're on?"

  • No matter how many times Bugnie tries to force me into Crucible I will never ever ever LIKE it. I play on occasion because bungie feels this God Given Need to force everyone to play but I will NOT change my mind. The only people who like crucible sit at their XBOX Screen sucking through their braces while talking and hoping they can get sick so they dont have to go to JR high the next day.

      • Good list, man - quedos, and thank you for writing this. For all you other guys out there tired of low KDs, I just wanted to share what I've seen. You can't expect to pick up a shooter, go into PvP, and wreck straight away. When you first start out - you suck. Not because you're dumb; not because you're incompetent; not because you suck at life; but because you don't know what you're doing, because this is the first time you've tried fighting enemies who - 1v1 - will give you a run for your money, instead of relying on being tanky, or on weight of numbers (like you find in PvE). My magic number was 400. It took me 400 hours - 400 hours! - over 6 months to get my KD positive and start having games that satisfied me consistently. I don't know why I persevered; that was a 6 month process of logging on most evenings and weekends, and being treated roughly. So, if you go into Crucible; as a main PvE player; and you run a KD of 0.1; and you knock that quest meter up 5% in those 5 minutes that brutalization took; think of this: - How many times did you have to wipe for your first Calus kill? (I think my fireteam did over 100 wipes over a few days - so that sack of sh1t Calus had a 100.0 KD against each and every one of us) - how many times have you had to restart a boss fight in a nightfall due to wipe? - how many runs did it take to get Whisper? And realise that, actually, you're doing pretty solid from a PvE lense - even with a crappy KD - and flip that lens around and see the progress, not the instamelts.

Here's the personal guide I used in D1. If, like me, you've had years to try PvP in various games and have had enough experience with it to confidently say that this infuriating crap is not your cup of tea, this is for you. Rule zero: Just avoid it. Juuuuust fvcking avoid it. It's a game you're playing for fun; you don't need the aggravation. If you hate the Crucible and have no reason to go in, don't be another "+1" that allows Bungie to say "Wow, our players really love the Crucible. Look at those numbers!" HOWEVER, in those rare instances where you deem the loot to be worthy of wading into this vile cesspool... 1) Prepare mentally. I suggest meditation or whatever floats your boat and gets you lose and focused. You'll need to keep calm because raging uncontrollably will make you play like an ineffective idiot. Build up your zen, because this shit will test you. If you start losing it, stop, and get yourself back in the right mind before going back in. 2) Make abstraction of the kind of people you will be mingling with. PvP communities include some nice people but with a few exceptions, they're largely lurkers. It's the noisy toxic twats that are the most visible ones, as if they had scared the decent humans into silence. PvP attracts more imbeciles than other activities and that's a fact. Be thankful the Crucible doesn't have vocal comms enabled by default. 3) Don't expect sportsmanship. PvP is a competitive activity, but it's participants usually don't have a sport culture (besides, maybe, watching "pro" wrestling) and their idea of sportsmanship is totally screwed-up. That's why you'll routinely see behavior that would start brawls and fisticuffs in real life. That's also why the vocal toxic twats mentioned above dislike SBMM. Because with SBMM, they can't shit on n00bz for lulz. Have the lowest expectations about PvP players and you'll never be disappointed, and will sometimes be pleasantly surprised. Just rarely. Wait... wait. I worry that what you've just read is: "have very low expectations". What I wrote was: "have the lowest expectations". Do you understand? 4) Use weapons and powers you are good with and that will help you accomplish the goal you are here for. Within those options, use the META, the overpowered, the broken. Fair fights are for suckers and no one is giving you one anyway. Use good gear, leave the crap in the vault. 5) Go in with a full team of friends. Misery is more bearable when shared, and you might have an edge because you're communicating and the other side often is not. Note that in the ass-backward thinking of the PvP community, teamwork in a team game is viewed as unfair and you might earn some hate. Don't try to understand, these people are idiots. 6) If playing solo, get in and focus on what you came here to do. Bungie's insistence on giving players counterproductive goals (via quests and bounties) to accomplish during an activity that requires focused teamwork is baffling, makes teams of solo randos even more disorganized, and is another source of chaos and frustration. Just roll with it, don't get bothered if a teammate seems to be throwing the game because he's insisting on punching everyone: he's likely trying to get some silly bounty done. 7) Don't leave the game early, no mater how bad you are losing. Not even if you've been thrown mid-game in a losing cause. That's unsportsmanlike (for real). Along the same line of thought, don't AFK. AFKing is worse than quitting, because it deprives your team of a replacement player and feeds free kills to the enemy. Remember that there might be some of those decent humans on your team or on the enemy team: don't be just another typical, bad experience to them. 8) If you get unsolicited hate mail, don't engage, report it to Sony or Microsoft. Stupid people who lack self-control so much that they take the time to write insults need to be periodically educated with communication bans. Besides, sparing other people from two weeks worth of mom jokes, bubbling bong sounds, farts and belches is an act of love: be generous with it. 9) If you get killed often by the same gun or power, do not come here to complain about it and/or call for a nerf. You're a PvE player, you don't want stuff to be made dull and ineffective because you got butthurt during an activity you don't like anyway. See rule 4 about using the best gear. If you go in with sub-par equipment, that's 100% on you; assume your choices and shut up. 10) Don't blame others. You're not doing so hot either. There. These rules won't make you enjoy the Crucible: you're past that, you've tried it hundreds of times, you know you. It'll just get you through with your hardware, relationships and sanity intact. Maybe. Don't blame me if your gaming rig ends up in your swimming pool by way of impulsive defenestration. That'll be because you failed to follow rule zero.

        • God forbid bungie allows the player choose what activities they do on Destiny. I honestly wonder if Bungie gave people the option to get every weapon or armor piece through an alternative path for example if Bungie was to give players 3 options Option 1) Quest and activities do not include PVP Option 2) Quest and activities do not include PVE Option 3)Quest and activities maintain a 50/50 balance of PVE/PVP Truthfully if there were ways of getting the guns and weapons without Gambit and without Cruicible I would. I personally think both game concepts are trash if I wanted to play a PVP game there are better options out there then Destiny. I am to the point where I am done spending money on games that force me to play their way. I want to play games that allow me to get (use Ace of Spades as an example) without having to play Gambit or Crucible because to be honest I don't give a rat's ass if we win or lose I want to get the quest line done and go back to playing things I want to play. Now I hear everyone say things like "health of the game" look at the forums there are posts all over players complaining about teammates in Gambit, Players complaining about teammates in control, I see people complaining about players in the blind well etc etc. 1 way of lowering playing with trashy teammates is to offer seperate quest lines, myself personally I would opt out of Gambit and Cruicible. I am not talking about making things easier just alternate quest lines. Hell you want to talk about game content 3 characters 3 alternate quest lines to getting guns, you put the power of choice into the gamers hands and not the game developers the health of the game will improve so much. As of right now the developers are putting powerful gear on a Gambit match on 3 gambit matches that's why peoole playing (3 games and you receive 2 powerful drops) that's better then anything else out there 5 cruicible matches and you get the same from PVP. Hell it took me a week running the blind well to get a seed of light for 2 of my characters.

There's no such thing as being good when the only weapons I'm killed by are shotguns, supers and rockets. Crucible is pure chaos and the only "skill" involved is being on a team that communicates. But hey they don't even allow team chat unless you are in a party with those randos. What happened to the old days where if you had a mic, you could talk to your team There's no strategy when shotguns are around every corner and heavy ammmo is more available than the air we breath. Oh wait I just died from a super and spawned into another death by another super.

            • Here's a better mother-blam!-ing idea. How about Bungie not make us wade into the -blam!-ing cesspool that is PvP in order to get PvE story weapons. -blam!- Bungie. -blam!- this AoS quest. I literally just shot and killed someone with Crimson, nothing but yellow -blam!-ing numbers. Did it count towards the quest? No. Why? Because -blam!- YOU BUNGIE YOU STUPID NO GOOD PIECES OF SHIT.

I suck at PvP and trying to get 25 guardian precision HC kills for the AOS was a nightmare. Stuck with it and finally completed the exotic quest early this morning. The exotic HC is really good and definitely worth getting. P.S. I used the Crimson HC for the 25 kills.

Sometimes they die and i survive. Sometimes we share a kill. Other times we both die. There are peeps who try very very hard in this game. Most people need to understand when you have a team communicating well, amazing shitt can happen. Well that's all. Thank yall and you for reading this

                    • This is a very long post detailing how to enjoy scraping manure out of a barn! With the added fact that you paid for the "pleasure" of scraping said manure. "Guys! I know the manure smells and no sane person would want to do this but, it's easy! Just hold your breath and wish for death!" We paid for a game that originally focused 80% on PvE with a 20% side of PvP. It has quickly become 80% PvP with a side of PvE. This is reason enough that myself, my wife, and the other 8 or so people we know irl that used to play, have chosen to not buy Forsaken. The very fact. The audacity! That we have to even see a post like this infuriates me! "I know eating dirt tastes bad guys! But with a few easy steps you too can enjoy being forced to eat dirt that you did not want to pay for! It's so easy!" I'm not mad at you OP. You do you. I'm glad you found a way to choke the dirt down without gagging. I can't.

                        • Very sound advice OP. I agree with all of it. Although many won't stick through a losing game. It's sad that all this drama could be avoided if Bungie did like most MMOs and alternate objectives. For every PVE Step there is a PVP Step & vice versa. The vitriol is created due to players being strong armed into it. I learned my lesson in D1. Right now I have D2 base due to PS Plus & I haven't even unlocked Crucible. Shaxx gave the unlock quest. It will rot in my quest book however. Sadly, the undeniable truth is that players will play the content that they want. Be it PVP or PVE, Bungie needs to let players organically play PVP. Quest steps/game progression being tied to it creates animosity because the players aren't organically being allowed to play the mode. Instead they feel "forced". Trying to force/entice/push/suggest another mode to them just creates the current situation the community is in & either pushes players away, creates toxicity, and/or has the opposite effect of the developers intention. I'm not saying don't have PVP quests, bounties, & etc. PVP deserves it as much as PVE. But Bungie needs to treat each equally. For questlines that are lore/etc. Like AoS, there should be PVE alternatives to the PVP steps & vice versa. End of story. I hope one day Bungie learns this. They seem to have learned alot with Forsaken yet some mistakes they just keep making. =/ Oh well. What kills me is that so many PVP players want people to just deal with the current situation yet they hate how many people aren't playing objectives, are sabotaging their team, feeding enemy players, & etc. Well, that's because players want to do their quest then never come back. So as a community players should come together & tell Bungie it's time for change.
