Daybreak Wars Ch. 6 pt. 4: A Day Without Light

“No, d***it! No! Come on!” Edward yelled as his hands cut open from the concrete slabs. How he was still standing, I couldn't understand; everyone else had already collapsed. I was already sitting down so I didn't feel the pain of hitting solid ground; just the sensation of my Light disappearing. The only way I could describe it is that it felt like my soul was ripped out of me, and I was just a husk of my former self. So to see Edward still fighting, still trying to lift that slab off of Haxx, it left me awestruck.     “Ed…” Gale cried; I could hear the conflicting emotions in her voice. After getting back to her feet, she grabbed the hunter’s red hands. “I hate it too… but there's nothing we can do…” Edward stared at his wife for a long time; his helmet hid his expressions, but his radio revealed his total breakdown as crying was the only thing audible. He dropped his head on Gale’s shoulder and continued to cry.     Dad sat up on one knee and watched as the electricity jumping from finger to finger died out. He turned his gaze to the Traveler, now glowing a furious orange. He and Conner helped Mom up, then they scanned the rubble--our home was gone.     Several harvesters flew overhead and swept the streets with spotlights. They were hunting us--any of us that were still alive. Dad placed a hand on Edward's shoulder and the hunter looked at him; neither spoke, but there was a mutual understanding that it was time to leave. Everyone prepared to move, except C.P; he hid himself between chunks of concrete and rebar.     “Come on, C.P, we can't get him out…” Edward said sniffling slightly. The ghost didn't move, and he definitely did not say anything.     “Let me,” Kelly said after appearing beside Edward's head. She flew over to C.P, and the two silently stared at each other. She turned back to us and said, “He’s not coming; there's no point… If Haxx stays, so is he…”     Edward stared at the chrome ghost for some time, but he gave in. “Stay hidden, C.P. You know how to find us if… if you need to.”     As we began our aimless exodus out of the City, a lone explosion grabbed my attention and yanked me around. I looked up and watched as the wings of the Tower broke off and fell onto the streets below. I refused to let myself wonder if anyone was beneath those titanic chunks of debris.
