Hunter Class : Nightstalker - New player looking for some tips / help

Hello Everyone ! So first of all a little bit of an intro. I never played Destiny 1, and have only been playing Destiny 2 since Thursday the 14th of december. Meaning just about a week in. Currently at light (?) level 316, and still learning the game. Haven't finished the osiris expansion yet, and still have like 3/4 of the adventures to do. I chose hunter, and subclass Nightstalker at the moment as I like being a bit of a support character too. I sometimes switch to the Golden Gun thingy, if necessary. I do not have a lot of exotic gear, but did already get 5 pairs of Gemini Jesters. Anyway, I had some questions, as I'm trying to look itno the class, finding tips, gear guides, playing guids, and so on. But what I find is very conflicting, apparently a lot has changed for the class already too. 1. I've read Orpheus Rigs are a must-have, but other posts are saying it's been nerfed into the ground. Are they still worth it? Is it still better paired with Way of the Trapper? 2. I'm using Way of the Pathfinder (or however it's called with the Moebius Quiver). As it says to generate more orbs for the team and myself. But I hardly seem to be generating orbs :) As if the anchor isn't lasting that long, and firing multiple shots I'm not sure if I should aim at different mob groups or focus the one I'm facing. Any tips here? In PvP I use Way of the trapper, or should I use that nonetheless in PvE too? I've even read that it could be beneficial not picking up the Moebius Quiver perk (but too late for that) 3. Is there specific gear I should aim for (Nighstalker) as of mid december? Both armor and weaponry 4. Should I aim the anchors at a mob, or more at the ground ? (yes a noob question) I'm sure I'll have more questions, but these seem to be a bit more important. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated ! Thank you !

  • Orpheus rigs + top tree = pve. Learn the moments to use them. The more you tether, the better. Now with the masterwork weapons, I average 80-100 orbs per strike and constantly have a super once the first one builds, unless I am with a really good team, then it is 50 orbs but still constant super. If you need to use bottom tree, then use foetracer helmet. Bonus damage on low health targets. The bottom tree is good for bosses. Shoot all 6 tethers into the crit spot of a boss for great damage. Pvp comes down to play style and there are several great options. I personally like foetracer and top tree for pvp. The longer lasting tether is great for defensive plays for your team and the foetracer is great for a little extra damage. Especially if you are using weapons with kill clip or bonus damage on bottom half of clip. The new exotic legs with disorientation and removal of radar are really good as well for close quarter pushing players. Just go on to a planet and play with everything to see how it feels to you and how to understand the tethers.

    • I always use way of the trapper(top tree). In PVE I pair it with orpheus rigs(still amazing!)- really take advantage of your invisibility, smoke grenade, and keen scout to stay on top of your enemy while making it difficult for them to even find you(gambler's dodge for more smoke grenades). You're basically a survivalist, using your smoke and tether to help your team destroy the enemy. Shoot tether at floor as close to the center of your enemies as possible, to get the most tethered. In PVP I use Graviton Forfeit for more invisibility and smoke grenades. I use marksman dodge. Shoot tether at enemy directly(mainly use it to shut down other supers). Seriously take advantage of keen scout, smoke, and invisibility. Gives you supreme area and movement control in any situation.

I play exclusively the top tree PvP 1. invis when you see red or get shot 2. Place your trap and super where you think the enemy will be, thats why you have the enhanced radar. 3. Spike grenade all day at walls of choke points, dumb guardians walk right Into the beam without even thinking and the beam is quite long when laterally placed. 4. Slaughter your tethered foes and laugh as they are basically helpless 5. Shut down supers for super mega troll effect.

    • the sunshot is a great gun for your hunter, hits hard and works wonderfully on tethered yellow bars

    • Orpheus Rig is still arguably the best Nightstalker exotic and should be paired with way of the trapper as it only works on the last arrow you fire. With Orpheus Rig you should avoid enemies as it works of things tethered, so if they die to the arrow that's one less enemy tethered. Outside that whatever spot(s) reaches the most enemies is where your arrow(s) should go.

    • Full support and can survive in most situation?? Pick top tree... U want to be a support who can do a fair damage pick bottom tree... Orpheus rig is OP right now you should use this for PVE every single time... It's the only exotic you need With top tree equipped you should aim on the ground... with bottom tree you should aim at the mob

I always use Nightstalkers upper skill-set for long tether duration, and invisi-dodge. With that in mind, I stack 3 void ability CD reduction Mods to get the most dodges I can (especially for PvP). With the tether, aiming at a target isn't crucial- especially with top set's Tether range. In a Crucible match you can hold down a key area (heavy ammo, capture point). Use the Tether (and/or smoke Grenade) as traps and not direct attacks in those defensive situations: placing them above doors or around a corner. Bait them in, invisi-dodge to maintain your survival and mop up everything your Tether catches or your smoke blinds. I usually run with the chest piece (dragon something... Can't remember the name of it) to give that much more utility to the dodge. Also: smoke grenade + Quickfang sword = way to close a gap and slay some enemies without corner camping.

Orpheus Rig is THE best pve nightstalker exotic for way of the trapper. And no, it hasn't been nerfed. 2. Way of the trapper's shadow shot lasts the longest and is the best for clearing mobs while pathfinder's shot is more for dps. 3. For gear; rig, jester, stompies, forfeit, foetracer, dragon's, and knucklehead are all must haves for nightstalkers. As weapons go, whatever you're comfortable with. Personally, my pve loadout is orpheus rig, nameless midnight, urieal's gift, and sins of the past and pvp is stompies, mida, urieal's, and quickfang (shocker). 4. This depends on what's in the mob. If it's just adds then at the ground in the center of the mob. If there is a captain or boss, then that's your target.

    • Yeah when it comes to orb generation of the bottom tree, I've seen a guy do a breakdown on the subclasses and pointed out that it seems easier to get orbs when you don't put an upgrade point for quiver, also without quiver orpheus rig can actually make use of the bottom tree as well. (I'm honestly considering resetting my hunter at some point once I reach max power) Orpheus Rig with the top tree is is god tier for PvE basically. As for PvP, I tend to use graviton forfeit with the top tree so every time I dodge my smoke comes back faster, also if you have rat king, it will also get affected by graviton forfeit. The exotic armor you want for PvP is really up to how you play.

      • You see a large group of adds, you must tether. If no super, you sincerely wish you could tether because they are gathered so perfectly to die. That is all.

      • Use the top skill tree, way of the trapper, and if you can get your hands on Orpheus Rig or The Dragon's Shadow. The latter has great synergy with the invisibility dodge and can change your play-style to an aggressive ghost. :)
