Literally, there is no comparison to this archetype.
Pulse Rifles? Absolute joke.
Hand Cannons? They require skill and still have a lower time to kill, no to mention they have about half the effective range of any Auto Rifle.
Sidearms? Total crap, save for the ridiculously OP burst fire ones.
Scout Rifles? If you're using them in Auto Rifle ranges, you're an idiot.
So where does that leave us?
Well, there is one effective long range archetype, one mid range archetype, and one close range archetype. Scouts, Auto, and Last Hope. Lots of diversity here.
The problem is two-fold.
One, Auto Rifles just straight up kill too fast for very little effort. Not mad about the kill time so much as their massive amounts of aim assist. If Auto Rifles are gonna kill fast, there's got to be some kind of skill requirement. Same reason why Last Hope is so stupid OP; it kill quickly with no skill required.
Two, there is no other viable competition to Auto Rifles. Like, none. Zero. Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles require some actual skill to use, while still killing slower and being less effective than Auto Rifles. This is especially true of Pulse Rifles. Unless Bungie intends for us to only use Auto Rifles for the rest of time, Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles need to get an adjustment. Maybe a boost to impact to help make them a little more consistent.
So yeah, that's my take on Auto Rifles. Now, I don't want them to be utter crap for the longest time like in Destiny 1, I just want there to be some variety in the Crucible, not just Uriel's Gift. (Also, screw High Caliber Rounds!)
C'mon Bungie, take a look at your game.

So Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles are a little underpowered and need a buff like we've been saying for weeks, got it.
