How dangerous is it to look at a solar eclipse?

Title for reference. I was wondering because I know it's coming around tomorrow and i'll more than likely miss it. I'm in Kansas and I work in an Army clinic. Totally forgot to get filters to actually appreciate the view if I wanted to. ANYWAYS. Is it really all that dangerous? I mean I was here when Bungie first updated the website when Destiny was about to launch and had the horrendously bright white background and my retinas didn't burn then. How about if I just glance at the sun with some shades on instead?

  • If you want to go blind for the rest of your life then go ahead and look at the solar eclipse. But there will be a split moment where it will be safe to look at. For about 1 minute to 2 minutes and 30 seconds it will be safe to look at because the moon will be completely over the sun

  • Bro, if you stare at the eclipse and endure the pain you will be able to see in the dark!

You've got a few options. First, and riskiest, applies if you are in the path of totality, during which there is a 7 minute window where the eclipse is safely viewable with the naked eye. It's risky because if you misjudge the timing, or if a portion of the sun is still visible, you might still damage your eyes. Second is to make a Pinhole Camera. There's a number of guides online, but you might not have the time to purchase the parts and build it. Third is to use a digital camera. You can safely view an image of the eclipse on the screen of your phone or camera (just don't look through the viewfinder), but unless you have a sun filter you run the risk of damaging the camera.

    • The worst thing you can do is wear the glasses and look at the sun then take them off and immediately look again. This is because your eyes will be fully dilated and the sun will burn your retinas and leave you fully blind.

    • Sure, go ahead and stare at the sun. Let me know how that solar retinopathy works out for you.

      • Damnit people, you can make one with either toilet paper or towel rolls, a small box, and a mirror. You don't need some schmuck's "eclipse only" glasses.
