Beyond Good and Evil, a Retro Review

Well, with E3 2017 finally over and it's initial dissatisfaction starting to fade, it seemed fitting to finally put up my two cents on a game not many people have played and is once again getting a long overdue sequel (or prequel in this case). Beyond Good and Evil has had its own following for the past 12 years and got an HD remaster back in 2011 to breathe new life into the game's fan base, yet it's presence still relatively unknown. The game places you into the shoes of Jade, a photographer who runs an orphanage on the earth-like world of Hillys. Living with her is her Uncle Peyj, a human-pig hybrid. This becomes a common sight throughout the world of BG&E as the world around you is populated with a slew of anthropomorphic animal hybrids and humans ranging from rats to cows and more. Early on Jade and Peyj get pulled into an ongoing conflict with an alien race known as the Domz. A conspiracy begins to stir as people start disappearing and Jade must set out to uncover the truth behind the mystery. Combat, stealth, platforming, and photography are all blended together to make up this 2004 gem. While the cartoonish style and exaggerated features help it stand the test of time, the camera angles oftentimes give way to its age. Overall I was thoroughly captivated with the gameplay and drawn to the story at hand as I anticipated what would happen next. Coming down to it, I give it a nice 8.5/10. While most holds up, the camera can fight the player at times and the combat is a bit lacking in depth. If you're interested in trying it out for yourself Xbox released the game for free a few months ago as part of Games With Gold but it's still pretty easy to pick up either on the XBL marketplace or on Steam for $9.99. Thoughts, comments? Tell me what you think of Beyond Good and Evil and if I've helped you understand that trailer with the pig and monkey from Ubisoft's panel a bit more.
