No weapon patch would be truly complete without a nerf that Is 100% arbitrary; No one asked for; Affects PvE for no reason at all; Makes everyone go "wtf?"; Shits on a fun gun; Fixes a complete non-problem; Does the opposite of its stated goal. GG.

  • I'm confused. It isn't arbitrary at all, if the nerf wasn't made, ToM would just wreck in RoI. Screw the new raid mechanics, just camp up with a bubble. No one asked for it because no one used the strat in PvP, it wasn't harming players, rather the game's intended strategies. The gun is still fun to use. It was a problem, it was way too powerful and reduced strategy to 0%.

  • The first time I ever heard of ToM being abused the way you describe is right after this patch. It wasn't a widespread problem. And if it had been, so what? Other ways of dealing that kind of damage still exist, and are less trouble than necessitating 2 titans chaining wards. As for the new raid, let's wait and see.

  • Really? You've never heard of that strat? It was used everywhere. People where just camping up with a ward to take down Skolas in less than a minute. It was a strike boss strat, and it would definitely be a strat in the next raid if not for this fix.

  • Touch of Malice is only useful as Daugthers in King's Fall. Anyone still using for Oryx needs to get with the times.

  • Honestly no, I don't remember hearing of that strat. I guess if it had been that big a thing, there would have been another riot on this forum, as is usual. We (clan friends and I) sure figure it could be used, did it on occasion, but then went "meh" and never used it again. Many other ways to dps that are less trouble.

  • That's because the only time it's worth using is in the raid (and it currently is the preferred method in the raid) and in a few nightfalls. But there are videos all over YT on it. People also abuse it against Warpriest in addition to Black Spindle. Largely, it's not necessary any more, but it would have been in the next raid.

  • Eh, we'll see. Part of my admittedly knee-jerk reaction is the half-baked nature of the nerf. Patched ToM doesn't cancel any other kind of overshield, and the cheese you describe can still be done using Armor instead of Blessings. You need some raised ground to stand partly out of the ward, and it's less mobile, but the shield is much stronger.

It could be, it'd be a lot harder to pull off reliably with a team of six though. There was also a strat where Warlocks used their overshield melee to do the same thing. I've used that one in Nightfalls. ToM with a sunsinger with the gauntlets which gave double melee charges. ToM the boss until you've got a sliver of health, melee a nearby enemy and repeat until you die, then self res and keep going until you run out of melee charges. It took a bit of planning in making sure there was always an enemy nearby, but it was actually really reliable. Well, rather than die, just have Radiant skin on, but most of the time in a Nightfall, you've got self res on. But yea.

  • I tried it also with defender, No Backup Plan, Unbreakable & Relentless. Similar to yours. The long duration regenarating Force Barrier is what makes it worthwile. As you said, you need some poor ad nearby, but it's not too bad.

  • They did it because I'm guessing it would allow for players to annihilate this coming raid at some certain point. Wanna take some bets?? Don't be confused by what I said. I think it's bullshit but you have to think like Bungie. Which is kinda a strange statement since it would appear most of their decisions are just knee-jerk reactions or brash over-arching remedies.

  • We thought that about the Gally too. But really they just don't like it when their customers use their guns in a way they don't like. Gally was lfg. Now ToM is being used in pvp and they don't like it.
Now ToM is being used in pvp and they don't like it.
I wouldn't take that at face value, personally. It has less than 1% of kills in all crucible related game modes. So clearly they did not nerf if for PvP reasons.

  • Exactly. Think of the forge, and super sharing. It'd be incredibly easy to just pop supers, always have a bubble, BoL, and 2x dmg from ToM.

  • Hi Hurphy, I think I would take that bet. Many past nerfs (and a few buffs) are still unexplainable today, or have missed their mark completely. I think it's hazardous to try to make sense or predict Bungie's game design decisions, but given the pattern I'd say my odds are, what 3:2 maybe? Not too bad. I used ToM in two places: 2 daughters, and Oryx (where I'm usually on ogre duty with another bubble bro). Everywhere else, it was just more trouble that it was worth, and there were always better options. Now, we'll just use Sleeper for the ogres. No big deal, I love that laser cannon. Hell, many no-nonsense and far more experienced raiders in this thread give testimony that Sleeper works better. I beleive that. However, this raises another question. In this hypothetical situation in this new raid we know little about, and that ToM would have broken, I'll be able to WoL-bubble and melt it with Sleeper. Which will probably work even better. So they shat on ToM why, exactly...?

  • Well "nerfed". In that they fixed an issue that was causing it to "bounce" inside unusual targets and tick twice for damage. The gun otherwise functions normally against 99.9% of all targets. Basically they fixed a bug.
