Open letter to Bungie

I just read this: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/42mnks/bungie_employee_speaks_out_about_current/ Don't know if it was real or not, or how much of it is accurate...but it made me want to say stuff regardless. I'm going to be brutally honest right now, Destiny is a good game. Back when it launched, the story was bland, the PVP was horribly unbalanced, the grind for gear was annoying as hell...but it's been getting better. With each new expansion, the game has improved significantly. The story has gotten better, we've been given more insight into the personalities of various characters, the raids are fun, and PVP has been slowly but surely getting where it needs to be. Bungie are still making mistakes, but overall they're doing good. I've made a few impulsive posts in the past week that I made after getting too hot headed during matches, and after taking a long break from the game (a few days counts as a long break for me. I know, it's sad), I've been able to clear my head and get back to thinking rationally. I've come up with some ideas that could help you endure. The first part is talking about things from a customer side. What I think would be best to make the game more enjoyable. 1) Balancing PVP I knew this would be a touchy topic, so I'd like to get it out of the way quickly. First thing I'd like to say...NO MORE NERFS. Each gun and class are capable if used correctly. I'd merely like to make a few additions 1.1) Titan Skating Titans are the most armored class in the game, yet there is a way for them to become the fastest as well. Don't take it away from them, that wouldn't be fair. Instead, give slight agility boosts to the other two classes so that, with maxed agility, they can move faster than a Titan Skater. 1.2) Dodge Every class should have a dodge that can be used as part of core mechanics. Activated in the same manner as shadestep, by pressing the crouch button twice whilst not airborne. Shadestep would more or less change to become a void-based upgrade to the dodge that allows them to be invulnerable while it's in effect. Twilight Garrison would allow Titans to dodge mid-air. 1.3) Drop When you're in mid-air, your mobility is limited, so what can you do to dodge enemy fire? I suggest that the crouch button can be held down mid air in order to descend faster. This would be a core mechanic, available to all classes. Descending further would give players another option to evade enemy fire. Since it'd be available to all classes, people would have less reason to complain about it. 2) TTK essential for enjoyment As I mentioned earlier, TTK is where you started to show just how much you'd improved since the game's launch. It was awesome. The only problem was that you basically removed all access to most of the enjoyable parts of the game. Control, Rift, Salvage, the vanilla guys can't do those things anymore. Well, they can, but it's all up to chance. They're stuck with the playlists that only let you decide how many people you want to be in the game with you. In addition, nothing worthwhile in the tower they can buy, only one strike playlist, no access to the nightfall, all sorts of problems. I'm asking that the game be fun for vanilla people again. For every activity that we enjoy, there needs to be an equivalent for them. Crucible needs to have a classic playlist for all the game types. There needs to be a Legacy Nightfall. There needs to be a Legacy Legendary vendor in the Tower, so that they've got something they can buy. 3) Old content to be made more relevant Endgame, high level variants of VoG and CE raids. Gear you get from the raids is aesthetically the same, but with stats the same as the stuff you get from KF. 4) Don't put exotics or challenges behind paywalls I bought the collector's edition upgrade for £20 because there was an exclusive exotic in it (well, 3). I'm not proud of that, please don't make me do it again. Exotics are like Pokémon at this point. We're trying to get them all because we like to collect them. Imagine if Nintendo turned around and said "You have 1023 out of 1024 Pokémon. In order to complete the Pokédex you must pay $15 for this bird". It wouldn't be very nice, would it? It would be okay if it was a timed exclusive (so those who didn't pay money would be able to get it eventually), so maybe do that? As for challenges, I don't like what you did with the Record Book in SRL. I did all the challenges (I could see when I looked into the book's details on Eververse) but no rewards for me because I didn't pay an extra £10. If you're going to make us pay for something, make us pay for it. If you're going to make us work for something, make us work for it. Do not make us pay to work for something. 5) Private matches and Spectator mode You already acknowledged that Private matches was something that we wanted, so I won't go into that. Spectator Mode isn't something I've heard about from you at all. I think the community would really appreciate these things being in the game. The second part is going to be various ideas that you could try in order to make it possible for you to do these things whilst easing your workloads and covering for any lack of funds you may have. 1) Destiny merch using fanart. Maybe, every time someone uploads a new thing to the Community Creations on this website, they could tick a box that says "I give Bungie permission to use this in advertising or merchandise". Then you could use it in merchandise. Someone does a mind blowing-ly awesome drawing of a Titan using Fist of Havoc on a Knight's face and have it's green blood splatter everywhere? You check to see if they ticked the box (if not you simply PM them asking for permission), put it on a poster, and sell it. In return, you can pay the guy who made it in Silver, Strange Coins, Motes of Light, Glimmer, and an exclusive emblem (for people who have their fanart on official Destiny Merch). I've seen tons of fan-made stuff, and I don't even go looking for it. There's tons! There's even a guy who made a comic about Cayde and a Fallen female fighting a horde of Hive. You could ask him if he'd be willing to make a Destiny comic. With an art style like his, I KNOW it will sell. I also believe that you could sell a wider range of merch and possibly start producing other Destiny media (Animated or live-action web series, books, mobile games....these are just ideas, people.) 2) Add more cosmetic consumables Consumables that make you appear different. Maybe one that changes your head into something ridiculous (like the pumpkin), something that changes your respawn (like the bats). Something that changes the color of your light (e.g. change the color of your super/grenade explosion/melee/double jump). You could have one that turns all your subclass-related abilities get a pink explosion with floating hearts, one that turns into green energy, one similar to grunt birthday party. Even consumables that temporarily change the color of your sparrow's trail. You get the picture. Sell consumables that allow people to make themselves look ridiculous (that's exactly why I LOVED the masks). 3) Official Destiny Tournaments Charge for admission, give prize money to winning team and first runner up. Make prize proportional to what you receive in entrance fees so that you always make a profit. Prizes aside from money could include Silver, glimmer, Strange Coins, even some of the Destiny merch mentioned earlier. Obviously, there is a chance that it won't catch on, so it is probably best to start small and grow gradually. 4)Crowdfunding If you're feeling underfunded and Activision isn't giving you what you need, why not ask the community for assistance? Like Kickstarter. Those who donate $5 or more will get a free bounty of Strange Coins and Motes of Light when the expansion is released. $20 or $40 (depending on the size of the expansion) will get you a free copy of the expansion when it releases, plus all the above. Eventually, you could get to the point where people can donate $50K to have some creative input (within reason) regarding a certain aspect of the game, or do a few lines of voice acting for an obscure side-character in the expansion. In terms of stretch goals, you could have additional strikes, some new exotic weapons, and maybe a raid. So far, this has just been a giant section on how Bungie can make money. Well, there's a reason for that. The post hasn't really been getting at the heart of the issue, what I believe that Bungie is doing wrong, and what should be done to put it right. 5) Relationship with the Community Let me be honest Bungie...your interaction with the community is extremely limited. I understand that it's impossible for you to respond to everybody, but I believe that you should hire more people to traverse the forums and communicate with members of the community. With all the money that the above things should get you, it shouldn't be too much of a challenge. You also need to loosen up a bit on these NDA's. I know there's stuff you can't talk about, but being told almost nothing leads us to assume the worst. You could at least tell us of issues you're facing and what you're going to do to try and fix it. This would at least give us reassurance that stuff is happening on your end and would also show us that you are people, rather than just some business looking for profit. Please, think about what I said.
