Personally, I'm against pre orders, since gaming has grown rapidly from the past years publishers are able to provide at least enough copies (More at the most) to big retailers such as Gamestop and Walmart. You can also buy them digitally from the console store and Steam, so even if your retailler is sold out of the game you were looking for, you can get it online and download it to your gaming system. I especially don't see a reason why anyone should "reserve" their digital copy when theres unlimited quantities. While some can argue you can get early access to DLCs for free when you pre order, you must also consider the risk on how the game performs on day 1 (Arkham Knight on PC is a perfect example of a terrible launch) and if you enjoy the game enough to take advantage of that bonus.

I think there should be a limit to pre-orders. No more than 6 months and the game has to have a set release date. I usually preorder if I know 100% I'm going to get a game and play it on launch day but I usually only preorder a few weeks before launch. I think the most I personally do is around 4 weeks before. That's about the time I know if I really want the game (considering there is adequate information about it available. I'm not much for buying strictly on hype)

The only thing wrong with Pre-Orders is the content that may or may not be associated with them that you get for being a day 1 buyer that's similar to buying a collectors edition of the game and having certain content associated with it. Publishers get paid for units shipped to stores so even if stores didn't have pre-orders, that doesn't stop retailers from stocking shelves with popular titles and replenishing them as people by them. Also, if a game doesn't work at Launch, Retailers and Steam and other sites are very quick to not only take the game off shelves, but to make them unavailable for purchase and even offer refunds. Arkham Knight PC is a perfect example. Now I'm not for or against Pre-Orders, I get that only having certain content available for pre-order sucks, but I just chalk that up with having certain developers favor certain platforms by making certain things exclusive for that platform. Taking away Pre-Orders doesn't even remotely solve the issues we have in this industry regarding games not working at launch or exclusive DLC. All of what stop pre-orders will do is just establish a new motto of "Day 1" which will mean purchasing a title on Day 1 will give you this DLC. If people want to reserve there game or any other object thats going to become available for purchase because they know there going to buy it, then thats their right. If I pre-order a game, I know I'm going to play it. I get that games are not reliable enough now to be expected to come out in the best condition. But instead of supporting the arguement to "stop pre-ordering" I'd rather join the side of people making our voices heard to developers and publishers and even retailers about selling us products that are barely functional. I want to bring up Arkham Knight again because in the wake of its poor PC versions release, everyone voiced there opinion and the game not only got pulled from shelves, but people were able to get refunds. Bestbuy would honor this video games refund in particular if anyone bought the physical version of the game. Steam gave full refunds and the game is not available for purchase. We need more of this, we need developers, publishers and retailers to realize that the consumers there dealing with aren't dumb and wouldn't take this sort of practices

1 ReplyI just don't want them to hand people exclusives for buying it at a certain retailer. Just add it all in the box and nobody will fuss that they didn't get a camo or a certain gun.
