What games reward skill?

I see a lot of posts talking about how Destiny doesn't reward skill. The new expansion has added higher level activities that are supposed to have rewards "commensurate" with the difficulty. However, despite the attempt, many people still complain about the RNG and say that Destiny doesn't reward skill. So I'm just curious, what games does the community think actually reward skill? I can't think of a loot/gear based game where rewards weren't based off of RNG. Let me know if you can think of any game that rewards skill and isn't based on RNG. Note: this isn't me defending Destiny. I'm just curious if people can come up with a game that truly rewards skill and not time.

  • Monster Hunter, people who have played G Rank probably know what I'm talking about. If you go into those missions without decent armour and weapons, then you're going to get killed in one hit. If you're not good at dodging, you're going to get killed in one hit, if you don't play as a team, you're going to have a real hard time. If you don't know exactly when to hit the monsters when they're vulnerable, you're going to get killed in one hit. Certain loot items can only be obtained if you injure a certain part of the monster's body (E.g. Zinogre Brace, if that's the G Rank version, can only be obtained by breaking off the Zinogre's front leg armour, and that bitch jumps around you like a bunny on crack) When you finally defeat the monster and get the loot you've been looking for, you actually feel like you've earned it.

    • For me the problem isn't so much that it doesn't reward skill but that it rewards a lack of skill more often. Rarely do you see the person at top of the board get the best rewards, more often than not someone that had an average to bad game gets rewarded and there is no incentive to get better.

    • I agree with you on the aspect of people screaming about RNG. But you have to realize two things. 1. People who play this mostly came from the fps world and aren't used to playing RNG based games or disliked them in the first place. 2. Nobody likes grinding without payout. I used to play WoW and grind for days to get certain items. But not everyone has done that. Also many FPS games these days basically reward you for doing something as simple as playing a match or completing an achievement. To come to a game where that is not the case is a little hard to grasp. Finally, to play crucible and work your butt off all match only to see the guy who came in the last 1 minute of the match get a ghally is discouraging to keep trying. Just some thoughts...
