So this guy replied to my satirical post and it turned into a long debate over satire, then it turned into him calling me childish. Even after I explained that two short quotes isn't enough to write off everything I say as childish, he still continued his last post saying everything I said was childish and at the end, he muted me. Isn't muting things something that only children do, which would make him a hypocrite? (If you want to see the post, I can't provide a link cuz iPads don't do that, but the title is HOW TO GET GJALLARHORN!!! CONFIRMED!!!!! Look for the reply chain with like 20 replies). Personally, I think it's childish because it's like covering your ears and going nahnahnahnahnah can't hear you
Edit: thanks for your opinions everyone. While I like the feedback, I thought this post was dead. How the hell did it get a second wind?

Edited by Master Chief: 5/3/2015 6:45:19 PMA great man once said: "Muting is for pussies who can't handle a little internet bullshit."

I think the silliest thing about it is how closely people seem to equate their tolerance of bullshit with the size of their e-dick. If removing genuinely terrible people from my experience here is soft.. them I'm proudly the biggest pussy on the site. Some people just don't deserve to be here with the cool kids. Muting allows me to make them go away.

I don't think it's childish. Its better than replying back to that person

Edited by Centurion: 5/12/2015 6:03:43 AMI AM mute...

Not if your muting annoying religious shit.
-
Yeah if you can't handle an opinion that opposes yours then you are definitely a child.

You pinhead, I love chocolate how dare you think that I'm an ugly barnacle. I'm going to use my imaaaaaginaaaation to imagine you in your underpants and take out my secret string to firmly grasp it. You're going to fall over and scream Finland and then I'll proceed to call the Hash Slinging Slasher to come and LEEDLE LEEDLE LEE all over you. When that's done the Hall Monitor will put on his gorilla suit and get his friends chip, penny, and used napkin to whoop your Wumbo. When I'm done with you I'll return to the Salty Spitoon and make fun on Weeny Hut Juniors, you know the guys with the magic conch. I will spend my millionth dollar and first dime on a phone call to random people and scream NO, THIS IS PATRICK. Those people will be your family, and I will soil your Uncle Dirty Dan's good time. And I know that you love Crabby Patties so I will buy you mayonnaise from the musical instrument store. I will push your house somewhere else but I don't want to touch it because I'm sterile. Then I will ask your injured body if you are feeling it now and that you are number one, the doctor and I afterwards will go on a panty raid to smell that smelly smell that's smelly. And that's not when I shift into maximum overdrive to steal the formula. You best be scared.

Muting someone because you don't like what they said to you, yes. Muting someone because you want to filter it out their excessive trolling, no.
-
It's only childish if you use a snarky insult beforehand. For example: Stfu kid. Muted and tears collected. These people usually have behavioral issues and don't function correctly. They constantly feel the need to get the last word, usually because they are socially dysfunctional and have psychological problems. I pity them.

I always thought muting was childish until I was just pushed to the point of muting someone. Someone posted a thread about smoking and asked for an opinion on if it should be taxed higher or not. Then would just keep spamming my post calling me illiterate and I needed to learn how to read before posting bs. It went back and forth then he went full rage mode after I said "okay I have my options and you have yours" and ermergrd if I didn't respond he'll keep copying and pasting on that chat then he'll private message me saying argument wasn't done. But sheesh some people get way too butthurt

I think so, just take it as it is.
-
It's childish if you simply can't hold your own in a debate, so you say an insult and mute because you're afraid of retort. It's not, however, if the aggressor is being idiotic and their debate is completely without reason.
-
In situations like this, I'd say that it's childish. If someone is just insulting you, over and over again, then it's probably ok to mute them.

Edited by Hoggs Bison: 5/3/2015 1:52:18 PMI sometimes mute people for having opinions or beliefs I disagree with, such as revisionist history (the Civil War was about states' rights!), or a deep-seated ignorance of subjects like social science and philosophy (gender = sex, atheists are more logical!). It's not that I don't want to hear those opinions, but instead that I've heard them a million times already and they really never change. At some point, the sheer repetitiveness makes those people not worth responding or listening to.

I don't think so.

Muting is a filter used to give you the best experience on the forum. I don't do it, but I don't think muting someone instantly means cowardice or the like. You don't have to think that much into it. After all, we're on a damn Internet forum. I think people forget that sometimes.
-
I only mute when I see stupidity. You're in the grey zone as of now.
-
Yes it does nothing

You have a window open, their is a dog right beside it barking. You're trying to sleep. Are you gonna leave the window open, or close it?
-
No it's not. If someone shit posts things I don't like to see, il mute them

Edited by bip: 5/3/2015 8:36:26 PMOne time I posted a related video to support my argument and some moron thought I was self advertising, so he muted me. Apparently I'm Jim f**king Sterling son.
-
I mute people who attack me for my own good. It's not childish, it's mature imo. I don't have to have the last say in things.
-
I don't mute. I think it's used as a 'well I don't agree, so I'm gonna shove my fingers in my ears and wave my tongue at you' insult.
-
Just ends a distasteful conversation. Not childish. The kid probably was childish though. Doesn't make muting childish.
