Weapon crafting is a very restrictive system, rather than an open and freeing system. Bungie messed up here. The goal of their game was to have tons of variety but they are actively preventing that from happening by capping the materials people need to work with for a conflicting goal, that people are going to disappear from the game after they get the roll they want, rather than play because they got it.
What sucked about year one was that there was no possibilities at all for variety, and that's why people checked out. It's an unfair comparison to compare what killed the game in year one to the fear of it in year 5.
