No.
Why?
It doesn't solve the issue. Your opinion is badly thought out. Those top 1%ers don't need to stay in the team based list. They can do freelance too and still run you over.
Still waiting for the community to actually unify and put some form of pressure on Bungie to solve the MM system and introduce some form of actual ranking system to put people where they should be.
The only drawback is the upper half of the average bracket will have to be included with the top 10% to keep match times down. But better that than what we have now by a wide margin.

Nothing like having the second best group of people end up with a far worse experience than everyone worse at the game then them and calling that competitive! Don't forget the part where everyone wonders why the game isn't working right.
I had this same thought recently as well. A lot of these people who run in fire teams are good enough that they could probably go Solo Flawless on their own. Heck, I typically run Trials Solo, even in the regular playlist, and I can still go Flawless. It can be challenging, as I'm far from an elite PVP player, but going Flawless in the regular Trials playlist while Solo is possible. But the thing is, even if the top percentile players are capable of running Solo, they don't because running in fire teams with equally-skilled players maximizes their chances of going Flawless each week. Can't really fault them for that, but there are also those who, ever since matchmaking entered into Trials, insist that solo matchmaking is only so people can "try" Trials. But in my experience, seven wins Flawless is still seven wins Flawless, regardless of whether you go in a fireteam, duo, solo, or in a Freelance playlist. Because getting the Seven Wins in a row is the core challenge of Trials. It is this way in the regular playlist, and it is that way in the Freelance playlists.

How does a rank system help? I don't get it, elaborate please. Not saying I disagree, but I see absolutely no way bungie can make this work since they've show zero ability to do so. So until that happens freelance is a marginally better way to get people playing that hate stacked teams.

We had the system in place but it's little more than a foot note now. Comp has it. You win you go up in rank. You lose you go down. SBMM could also work......but we have other interfering algorithms in play which need to be removed from the equation to let it do it's thing properly. Freelance was bungie throwing people a bone......and you know what we still kept getting the same complaints. Freelance wasn't enough........they squealed for Flawless Pool. Both have proven 2 things. - If you're good at PvP.......you're going to spend time you will eventually loathe because it gets boring. - You'll still get ran over in freelance by those same players who know PvP pretty well enough to put down 2/3 or all 3 of the enemy team. Skill is a factor. No arguments from me there. But isolating and splitting the playerbase isn't how you solve the problem.

Edited by rtopz: 3/15/2022 12:22:02 AMWell freelance mode works well enough that bungie introduced it to comp, to IB, to gambit...so it's not as horrible as you said. I prefer freelance without the pool to no freelance at all. Either way none of the modes are working perfectly and it's evident. Maybe rank system ala comp would work...unsure yet when you'd get "flawless" and when you wouldnt. I don't disagree on the player base split, maybe teams should more favor teams vs the purposeful matching against solos as they do right now. It's evident they skew it that way to give mid tier teams access to flawless at the expense of solos...who eventually leave.

Freelance is pretty much Bungie putting sticky tape coated in anaesthetic over a wound, except the wound is 10 times the size of the stick tape being used. The pain is numb but the problem persists. It was introduced to toss the solos and low ends a bone. A very cheap and lazy........but stupidly effective psychological trick.
