The analogy is usually used to refer to someone’s lack of autonomy and subservience to authority, not lack of power in an abstract sense.

I guess if you see the “controller” as the one playing chess but I’ve now come to realize that’s how everyone sees it. I was looking it from the perspective of the king which is why my view point is skewed. -
Even then though, from the pov of the king, the pawns are there as the first line of defence to blindly protect him and the rest of the genuinely important people.
