I am serious and i believe i will get incredible amount of hate admitting it. I will try to explain this in the most understandable way possible. This is all based off Cards, Ingame dialogue and story missions so this is all one big theory. There will be contradictions and much more following so here i go. It will be a headache to understand and you will struggle at first but it will make sense. Also, there will be some grammatical errors. The current age of when we are playing in the universe of destiny is somewhere along the 7th to 10th timeline plain. To understand this we must look towards the much overlooked In-game dialogue such as Dr Shim and The Exo Stranger. To set things it will start with the Exo Stranger in her journey guiding us though her failed attempts to stop the catastrophic event herself. She has witnessed time and again of the extinction of the human race to such a degree she knows exactly how it will play out. Thoughout the ages and humans reaching the pinnacle of their technological advancement they sought to expand across the galaxy, in doing so they discovered more resources and species, they watched them develop and evolve, to the extent where they nurtured. Over the course of generations of nurturing races and finding more they came across another space-faring race but their knowledge was much more than the humans and realized they were a threat but decided not to attack and instead learn about them. Over the course of ages they learnt and grew more apart and developed a hatred for each other which is where The Great War began The unknowns attacked first triggering a galactic war to find the home world but there were many colonies spread across the stars so they sought other methods of enslaving races of which was the Hive. The hive were the most adaptable to the unknowns transportational method and due to their capability of growing at unprecedented rates they used them as foot soldiers to find the human home world. As for the Cabal they were enslaved for their fire power which would have been used to take out human colonized planets with ease. During this time the Humans were focusing on doing the same but their methods weren't as advanced for traveling at the rate The Hive and The unknowns did but they still knew where they originated from. The humans went straight for the core but failed because of the Hives ability to transport and stopped them. As a result the humans fell back and lost hundred start systems in the process and lost many of their enslaved races too, eventually the humans became despite and begun to modify themselves, create failsafes, focused on defensive parameters and ways to endure the unknown and hive without losing knowledge, so eventually they modified themselves to combat the enemy with machines. The humans (only the military) fused themselves with the machines and using a network to communicate at incredible speeds. Over time the humans began to push the Hive and Unknowns away with their instantaneous communication and transport but just at the decisive battle the humans stopped. During the time of Humans endorsing and evolving into machines the Unknowns have achieved Trans-dimensional travel. Of this once more than half of the humans military was now machines, the Unknowns turned the machines against the humans and those under the machines control became the Vex, in doing so the humans were pushed back to the brink of extinction but due to hundreds of years at war. what was left of the humans made a failsafe with the conjoining of the Unknowns technology and in doing so they sent the ones left into the timestream of the trans-dimension to the point where the humans started the creation of the Vex but where too late, the Vex had already arrived to the second timeplain. This group of humans quickly used knowledge passed from the First timeplain to combat the Hive and Unknown and held their own for even longer and developed more and more failsafes to ensure the humans survival. Eventually after traveling though the trans-dimensional portals and thousands of year of war across the Timeplains the Unknowns were never seen by the last humans because they grew too powerful and couldn't push them back against the races the unknowns had enslaved. As the last ditch attempt of the Last Humans they created the master failsafe containing the original first dimensional human scientists as the Protectors to guide the first one last time. This failsafe left the dimension to where the final stand will take place and used it's collection of knowledge to to strike the Darkness first this time indirectly with other races not letting off the humans were using this failsafe to attack the darkness. With the failsafe attacking the darkness they brought time for other races to evolve and stand a chance against the coming war. Soon the Darkness caught on and targeted the failsafe but the failsafe had already fled to home system to make it's final stand. With the Failsafe falling apart from aeons of war it lands on mars where it is found by the new generation of humans. The humans, an advanced race but not too powerful yet used this failsafe or this Traveler in which it was called to expand on their technology. Using the Aeons and generations of technology passed down from each trans-dimensional era their understanding of technology booned. Using information from the traveler the humans created even more powerful failsafes and arrays of weaponry , they became space-faring at a young stage, the minds of the first age scientists were placed into more stand frames called Exos and warminds in which it was later called the golden age. While studing the Traveler it was later realised it was missing parts of it, like it was damaged or torn off. Soon the Darkness approached the Solar system and soon the failsafes begun to activated once more. The warminds transported the traveler back to earth and then went into a dormant state and preserving their knowledge realising they now stood a chance. After years of fighting and slowly clawing back lost group the humans established their first city beneath their saviour, the traveler and once more used it's left over technology to advance once more. The left over groups from the first dimension now used this opportunity to safely guide the humans indirectly and use a failsafe of the Traveler to resurrect the old army of the golden age, in doing so an army of guardians were born in order to prevent the darkness once more and in the process Strangers began to appear from the first dimension who watched the dimensions over time to fend off the coming darkness correctly. The Exo stranger utilizing ancient Vex technology to communicate with other first dimension survivors is safely pointing the Guardians in the right direction and making sure she does not have to bare witness to the extinction once more. With the collective knowledge of the warminds communicating with the first dimension survivors they prevent the darkness from advancing any further, pushing them back and establishing a stronger army than ever before with heros of the Twilight Gap. As for the Frames and Exos who knew too much had their minds wiped, the warlocks created The hidden to infiltrate the darkness strongholds. In the end the end the stranger and her group is making sure humanity survives, preventing catastrophes from occurring as they witness in dimensions before. This is all based off everything i have written down from ingame dialogue, cards and locations of key individuals. Feel free to write your own theories.
