Police in Cleveland fatally shot a 12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a replica gun. They were responding to a 911 call in which a man said a juvenile was scaring people with a gun that probably was fake.
The boy, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as Tamir Rice, was shot in the torso in the playground area of a recreation center Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the fake weapon -- which didn't have the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle -- from his waistband but had not pointed it at police. The boy did not make verbal threats, Tomba said, but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands. He died Sunday at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Sorry, I don't feel bad. There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns.
Here's a link to a NYT article, including the CCTV footage. The video is obviously NSFW.

In light of seeing the video, I no longer have an argument supporting what the police did. Their actions amount to little more than a drive-by shooting.
Sorry, I don't feel bad. There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns.
Wow, didn't expect that coming from you. I kind of feel bad though, I mean damn he was only 12. Of course, I would've shot him too in the same situation. Even with the Orange tip, the gun was in his waist band. He would've been shot by any cop the second be reached for it and I wouldn't blame them.

In response to those saying the cop should have used bean bag rounds: how is the cop supposed to get them? Unless the cop is mr flash i dont think he could run over to his vehicle, unlock then open the trunk, get out a shot gun, load it with bean bag rounds, then run back over to the kid and shoot him with the bean bag round all in the less than 2 seconds it would take for the kid to draw his gun Again im not taking a side on the incident im just responding to the frankly stupid suggestions that the cop could have used bean bag rounds

4 답변What a shame, a 12 year-old who should've know better must drop the weapon immediately, thats what I did when I was 11. So 19 years ago, my brother and I went out in a school field to shoot crows flying over in July. School is out for summer, and walking back with my pump BB gun that looks like a shotgun, a cop whipped around driving by. He jumped out yelling "Drop the weapon!". Guess what I did, dropped that -blam!-ing BB gun with the box of BBs and raised my hands high. My brother did the same who was 9 at the time, and BBs went all the ground. The COP heard and saw the clanking noise of the BBs hitting the side walk going every direction, and knew that isn't a deadly firearm. He yelled, what are we doing with the gun, I responded shaking that we're shooting birds with our BB gun. I nearly pissed my self, but he walked behind us and picked the BB gun and told us to turn around. I don't know if he drew his weapon to this day, but I imagine he did as my old neighborhood had, well still has high gang activity. He let me and my brother go home, which was just around the corner, and not to do that again as it's hard to tell real weapons from fake one, at that time it was the early 90s. What's my point, we'll I didn't have the internet, informative school programs, or grand parents who knew about those problems. I knew that when a cop says to drop something, you stick you hands high up in the air. This article is telling me he didn't know better or what to do, Im calling BS, he knew exactly what to do. Note: When I got home and told my grandparents about what happened, my grandfather spanked the shit out of me for walking around the neighborhood with a weapon. That's true education, and that is what that Boy needed, and I bet he would still be alive today.

16 답변Police is just doing there job. If you are stupid enough to ignore what they say you will face the consequence.

12 답변Apparently the cops didn't even shout at the kid or give him any warning. They just took the shot. Seriously, if you were a 12-y/o kid and a cop was poitning a gun at you and screaming at you, would you not put your hands up or like fall down on the ground and cry and piss yourself? What the hell were the cops thinking?!

1 답변Same I don't feel bad for him because he tried to pull it from his waist band instead of raising his hands.

1 답변작성자: Verbatim 11/25/2014 4:41:33 PMvery screwed up situation; i don't think it's intelligent or respectful to really take sides here someone made the point earlier that you could just fit an orange tip onto a gun or just paint it orange yourself to make it look fake? i think that's a pretty good point, it seems like a highly exploitable safety measure that's really a non-argument at this point

15 답변Kid probably tried to 360noscope them and they had to put him down. Later the cops were quoted as saying, "We totally -blam!- that scrub."

Just an fyi, because no one commenting seems to grasp the obvious: Cops are NOT trained to shoot to wound or maim. They are trained to shoot center mass until the target is no longer a threat. Please educate yourselves.

2 답변So all I need to do is get a real gun and put an orange bit of plastic on the end and everyone will think it's a fake gun? Really?

5 답변From the article I found this very interesting.
Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, said the officers were not told the caller thought the gun might be fake.
5 답변This is what happens when an idiot gets authority and a gun. We have our share of idiotic police too. Luckily they don't (normally) have guns.

While many of the incidences are totally redic, like the Walmart guy...where they shoot first. Most are incidences where it seems the people just don't seem able to follow the simplest of direction or commands. "Hands up" means reach behind your back, walk away, drive away, or make a sudden go for your license real quick like the guy that got shot in the gas station a couple weeks ago. Or in even worse cases feel they aren't obligated to comply. If the decision has been made by a cop that you're gonna be detained, there is NOTHING ON EARTH you can do to stop him except die. Pick your battle, that ain't the time or place....EVER. That goes for MB, he knew he was gonna be arrested, and he had the idea that he wasn't gonna go. This kid was 12, so should've had the sense to not been doing what he was doing. If he was "defective" in some way, who ever was his care-giver should've known better to give him the incredibly realistic toy. It's time for responsibility, and accountability for everything you do. And if everyone is "slow" "confused", or "just didn't understand", then it's time to exomine our breeding habits.
