Is this what gaming is, now?

So, let me provide a disclaimer before going on a short rant: Destiny is the first FPS I've played since Counter-Strike (yes, I played that in college, in the early 2000's), and the first sort-of MMO I've ever played in my life. I decided to get Destiny mainly for the FPS aspect, not so much the role-playing, leveling-up one. I love this game, though I'm eager for the expansions, and hopefully more beyond that, as the years go by. I just ran across some comments where a player said that it was another player's fault that he didn't have Fatebringer (you know, the Hard Raid gun that still has to be given by RNGesus). This really angered me, but had me thinking about the bigger picture. I've seen a lot of trolling on this forum with players trash-talking others, because they haven't done this, haven't done that, have trouble solo'ing Nightfalls, Heroic strikes, whatever. They haven't maxed out their guns...that's even a point to criticize someone on, apparently. Let me give a few statistics from my profile (obviously you can look this up): The big one, a 0.83 K/D in the Crucible. GUESS WHAT? I don't care! You know why? I have fun playing it. I like playing with a team, and at least getting "important" kills. As for Strikes, I die doing Tiger Strikes sometimes, you know why? I like to run and gun like an idiot, because it's a video game that allows for that. Of course, if it were real life, I wouldn't do that. Nobody would, you'd try to find cover. But there will be people to revive me. And I will do the same for them. I'm 33, I didn't play video games (regularly) for at least 10 or so years, after college, aside from having a PSP to pass the time. I'm an accountant, my girlfriend is getting her PhD in child psychology. We eat healthy, however you want to define that. Basically what I'm trying to get across to some of you is that we actually have lives outside of video games. Video games are fantasy. They're not real. I don't spend hours on end practicing getting the perfect headshot every single time I fire. I DO like getting assists in the Crucible, because I want my team to win. I try to get double-digit assists, actually. Weird, I know. It's like trying to be the John Stockton or Chris Paul of Destiny. Basically, for the trolls, understand that I and others don't play as often as you. We don't CARE about it as much as you, because there are more pressing issues in the real word. I SUCK at Destiny...and I'm ok with that. I have fun doing it. Do you really want to look back, when you're (hopefully) in your 60's, with a destroyed liver and kidneys from chugging Monster to stay up playing these games, and struggle to find some justification for it? To the GREAT players, who also are nice people who understand some players don't put as much time into it, but love to play with them all the same, a HUGE thank you. Out. Edit: Much appreciation for the positive responses, as well as the thought-provoking ones. 2nd Edit: Uh oh...looks like the Hive has struggled to get out of bed, finally... 3rd Edit: It said "Over and out."...but I changed it to just "Out" for the sticklers!!! >:(

  • My 4 friends and I play when we can as well. We are all between 32-34. We sometimes need a 6th for the raid if you ever want to play! We don't care much for stats either and just like to have fun! Take care man!

    • Gaming is buying 1/6 a game for $60 then buying $50 worth of dlc to get to the 3/6 path then waiting for the sequel to get to 4/6 and rinse and repeat

    • You're insinuating that the immature should gain some maturity. It takes growing up for that. Maybe your words will influence some teenagers (and adults for that matter) to think twice about how they internet...most likely, you vented to feel better but your words fall on deaf ears and blind eyes. It is what it is. I am 33 also. I live a life that is far behind what it should have been. But I love Destiny. My KDR hovers around 0.9. 70th percentile. But my zone captures are in the 10th percentile. Do the kids say I suck? Sure. But I have more fun than them, as do you. Let them believe that being a punk kid is cool. Hell, their friends agree. Meanwhile they are getting little fulfillment, hence the continued negative reinforcement. And we still laugh with delight over the simplest of things in a game. We are having fun while they are trying to fill an insatiable void. But they'll grow out of it. Until then: ignore them. That's what I do. OKay...enough Vodka induced ranting on MY part. Shoot me a friend request, OP. Same as my Bungie handle. PSN. Hopefully I'll get my PS4 replaced soon. It was stolen. For now I am building a friend network on PS3. Would enjoy some more time with someone my own age. :)

    • Yeah, I don't understand how some people have sunken in 300+ hrs. I mean 70% percent of my free time is spent playing destiny and I haven't spent half that time. By the way, I too was way into counterstrike back in the day. I suggest you try the halo series. IMO, the multiplayer is better than destiny PvP.

I must say, that though well worded and making certain good points about most of this community being full of douchebags that want to flame on others, you miss a bigger picture. I play destiny religiously, because gaming is my hobby. A hobby is what somebody does in their free time because they enjoy it. You say you are healthy, would you give the same hatred to someone who's hobby was to spend every free hour tending a garden to grow their own healthy organic foods? The difference is that the people in the gaming world tend to be "in your face" about how they are better, but it isn't the hobby's fault, it's the anonymity provided by the intermediary Internet. If your hobby is pool, then getting good at sinking one in the corner is important to you, so it makes perfect sense that those who game wish to make the perfect headshot. Don't knock people's lives just because they make different choices than you. However, If you want to hate people for using anonymity as an excuse to be douchebags and say hateful and harmful things to others, there is a line for that, i'll let you cut in front of me.

Gaming has always been like this. It's the enhancement of social media amplifying the ugly side we are now seeing. Refer to the F-wad theory. (RNP+PIP+Au=TFW) Relatively Normal Person + Anonymity (Perceived Internet Privacy) + Audience = Total F-Wad This can be combated with removing the Anonymity or culling the audience size down, which will never happen here. Ninja justice rules supreme for now

          • As long as you're playing the objective and being helpful overall, that's fine. It's the people who don't have a clue and/or don't want to learn or improve that drive me nuts. I'm hyper-competitive when it comes to gaming, as games have been a huge passion of mine since I was 8. And let's be honest, not everyone can be teh l337 haxxorz going beast mode on everyone every single game all the time - eventually you're gonna eat a bullet or two. That's one of the things I learned to appreciate from playing the Battlefield series, where the mantra "PTFO" reigns supreme. Nobody cares if you got the highest score or KDR if your team still lost (badly). what does matter is that you tried, and people still had fun. That said I would like to see a true casual mode added to Crucible, for those who just want a friendly game and aren't necessarily in it to win. I won't lie, if I see people on my team dragging us down and/or costing us the game (usually by stupid crap like ignoring heavy ammo drops) I get angry, and I hate losing games because of the incompetence of my teammates. I also know that a lot of people feel forced into PvP for various reasons and would otherwise prefer not to touch it at all. Iron Banner's a good way to separate these crowds but given that it's only a limited time event, that hardly makes it an ideal solution.

            • I like to think of my self as a gamer, I sit for hours infront of the tv playing destiny and get real enjoyment out of it. I am not the best at the game either, love to run and gun and have a mess around and laugh! Its why I play, people like you described suck the life out of the game I hate being thrown in with the hardened "must have 3.0kd minimum" people, it maybe fun for them but I dont care if I loose as long as I have a laugh doing so. (Thats why I cant play CoD anymore) We dont all drink monster, we dont all suck the enjoyment out of games, and we dont all slam casual gamers. I can though turn serious mode on for tight situations and that can also be fun, but thats more a once in a while thing :P

            • I understand that trolls can be frustrating and annoying, but be careful to not pair them with those who just like to play the game. Who are we to judge those who have fun chugging monsters and practicing to get a perfect headshot in the crucible? Who are we to stand at a distance and point our fingers mockingly at them, telling them they'll regret their decisions when they have health problems later in life? We all have our different ways of having fun. Casual or Competitive. 1 hour a day or 12 hours a day. We're all gamers. And I hope that one day we can have respect and acceptance for people on BOTH sides of the fence. Not just the one we're a part of. (however unlikely that may be.)

              • I agree with you it is just a game but your definition of a game is on a micro level. All of life itself is a big game where you have so many quarters (years) to feed the machine until you run out and its over. I find it comical that people take much of anything in life serious.... It is a simple rat race where everyone hurries to acquire more and more possession, power, prestige etc. etc. where in all reality we will all eventually end up 6 feet under only to be inevitably forgotten in time. Its a sad truth but it is what it is. Humans often forget how small and insignificant we really are on this blue spec of a planet in the universe because we are wrapped up and busy in our own individual worlds. Ultimately life is a game so don't take it seriously. Have lots of good laughs and have some fun while it lasts because we aren't going to make it out alive anyways.

"I have fun going 3-14 in Crucible and dying repeatedly to the same mechanics in strikes/raids, I paid my money and blah blah blah" yeah that is a really overused excuse for you suck at games. I can pay $10 to go see a movie and take a nap which is basically how you're wasting your money. Good luck with that
